Sal: Why not a full grit progression for the Sharpmaker?

Sal,

Thanks for the additional info. Looking forward to more details on the Gauntlet sharpener when you're able to share them.

As for the Sharpmaker rods, any chance you might do at least one "in between" grit in a finer diamond or CBN?

Andrew

There are some really good very coarse stones available at fairly inexpensive prices, so we've not gone coarser than the CBN/diamond.

As to the area between the diamond/CBN and Medium, thisis the first time we've heard of a desire for them. I normally go from CBN to fine grit with few issues.

sal

Hi Sal, I typically finish my folding pocket knives with either the medium or fine stones that come with the sm. Once I got my Southfork (Spyderco version) and a couple of Phils customs he got me to using a 600 grit finish on my fixed blades and I really like it. I finish those knives freehand on the lansky diamond stone. If am able to get them plenty sharp but I do miss the ease and precision of the sharpmaker. If you guys made some finer grit (say 600-800) diamond stones for the sm, I would buy them immediately! :)

Hi Andrew,

The Diamond and CBN rods seem to be similar in grit, though we've just begun making the CBN rods so we'll need some more "Real- World" testing before making final decisions.

Any grits between the Diamond/CBN and the brown rods would have to be a finer grit of Diamond/CBN. We've not successfully made a ceramic rod with a coarser grit. Currently, the D'mnd/CBN are 400 mesh.

The new "Gauntlet" sharpener is planned for CBN (400 mesh) and Ceramic (fine) rods in a Cats-eye shape.

Hi Sal,

I have to ask so bear with me but why only the two grits for this new Gauntlet sharpener? No Ultra fine!

I am not a sharpening guru so I guess I need assurance that if I was to get a Gauntlet when they come out, will those two grits be able to get a blade real sharp and that isnt a too big of jump, grit wise?

Thx.

I have no experience with the cubic boron nitride rods, and haven't read anything about them. Does anyone have any detailed feedback? I have a few spydies, a few other folders, a couple of knives in 1095, and a bunch of cheap kitchen knives. How useful would the addition of the CBN rods be for me? I currently have the coarse (brown), fine (white) and ultra fine rods (white with red ends).
Cheers, numbersman.

Hi numbersman, IMHO the CBN or diamond rods are a must for the sharpmaker. They will make it much easier to set bevels and sharpen a very dull knife. They make a much more useful addition to the sm than the ultrafines do. The diamond rods make a huge difference in the level of sharpness I am able to get out of some of the high wear resistance steels. Money well spent.

I hope this one has a 50 degree(inc)setting on it..I've got more than a few knives the SM 40 degree setting doesn't work for..

With the two optional rods, the Sharpmaker is outstanding imho. I use a strop for finishing.

Making them is not a problem. We'll need to see if the market wants them once the model is out.

Okay, that makes sense. Are those two stones (CBN and fine) enough to get a blade sharp without a big jump in grit?

Is there an ETA on when it will be released?

Thx.

It should work as a "two speed", but some people just like more gears to get to speed.

Don't have a date yet, we're still working on the tooling. It's a complicated mold.

Wow! It is very refreshing to see the owner of such a successful company taking the time to chat. This makes me want to go out buy a Spyderco right now!

As a matter of fact I think I will. I've been wanting a Delica and I can break out my Sharpmaker and touch up the rest of the gang. Thanks Sal!

Hey thanks for clearifying some issues for us Mr. Glesser. Now when you say "Cat's Eye" shape stones? Do you mean a stone similar to what was in the old Galley V sharpening kit that you all used to see back in the mid to late 90s? If so I'm very happy to hear that because I'm one of the few who kept and used the Galley V kit for all these years and I find those "Cat's Eye" shaped stones to be great for Reverse S blades and recurves both. For my Dodo model PE it's just about all I use anymore and I get excellent results with them. And I hope the "Cat's Eye" stones you have coming will also be made available in other grits?

Also is there any consideration in making the DOUBLESTUFF stone in more grits? That would sure come in handy for survival and bug out bags. Again thanks for clearifiy some questions we've had for some time now.
