Sale of huge collection sought

If you wish to post pictures, you will need to become a paying member. If you were to purchase a Gold membership for 25.00 you can actually sell items on this forum also.
I have absolutely no idea of the best way to sell an entire collection as the value is likely to be very large if the knives are from known and respected makers, but I am sure you will need makers names and pictures of said knives to help you in this endeavor, wherever you find to sell.
Good luck!:D

I use ImageShack for picture hosting.

Phil,

Welcome to BladeForums.

I'm going to recommend two individual sources, Bruce Voyles, and Dave Harvey....and provide hyperlinks.

Now, do your homework! Beyond that, I extend my wish for your good luck.

i think you need professional help to properly identify and catalogue the knives. next would come an appraisal based on knowing the current 'knife market'. then contact made with known collectors specific to each knife to see if they are interested.
Bernard Levine has a Forum here and his contact info can be found there. i believe Mr. Levine is in a position to do an excellent job with all 3 of the above steps.
Mr. Bruce Voyles (sp ?) is a very well known, established knife auctioneer as well as knife author. (as is Mr. Levine).
arranging to ship the knives from Canada to the USA for appraisal etc. should not be difficult.
however i do want you to know i have never sold a knife.

Hmm, this sounds quite an exciting adventure!

I can only imagine what such a huge collection would
do if it landed in the lap of an enthusiastic collector...
That would probably be the most amazing day in his life!!.

Best of luck with the sale, Phil!

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

You might also look to ArizonaCustomKnives.com to help with valuing and selling. They do take 25% of the sale though, but handle all the photography and have a great website with a large audience.

Vege-Taco,

I like Julie...a lot....but compared to Bruce, or Dave at Nordic, she would be vastly overwhelmed, and require outside help.....the stuff described above is not within her realm of specialty.

Good info to know. I'll catalog this in my memory for future reference. I still think ACK has the best website for buyers that I've ever run across. :D

Canadian Knifemakers guild www.ckg.org may be able to put you incontact with a collector or dealer who could assess it in Canada and advise the best way forward.

Cheers,

Stephen

Hi Phil,

The BEST Way to move a large collection is to seperate into a couple smaller collections. Trying to get someone to "BUY" the whole collection will reduce the amount of money you will receive.

You mentioned custom knives and factory swords.

Once you have separated these out.

Move to the custom knives and separate these by desirable makers and less desirable makers (desirable referring to their ability to command a particular price in the after market).

You will need to remove "feelings" from the pricing. With few exceptions makers (primary market) do not know what their knives are worth in the after market. Having handled a few of these...makers remember with "fondness" a particular knife and feel it should sell for more than it is really worth.

Your feelings as well...just because the owner was more fond of maker A over maker B that does not mean this fondness will translate into the after market.

If you are set on trying to move the whole collection at once...for the best chance of a good return.

Your best bet would be with Bruce Voyles. He has a large following for his auctions. In the last couple of years he has really stepped up the quality and desirability of the custom knives he has been offering.

So there is no misunderstanding. Bruce and I are friends. I have also used his auctions to move both factory and custom knives (with more than satisfactory results). I have also bought numerous custom knives from Bruce's auctions.

Good Luck with the Sale.

Try Tom Clark at Blue Rige Knives in Marion, VA. Phone 276-783-6143

I know he buys large collections of knives. He may even come to your home and give you a price.

I can understand Ken's edit but also would have hoped that he or other mods might be a bit more tolerant as, unless the user was not being truthful, is not a knife person but either is an executor or beneficiary of an estate that had a large # of custom knives with no idea about custom knives and how to value or dispose of them and was simply using BF as a means to get educated. Unlikely that there are many people capable of purchasing (at a reasonable value) 300 custom knifes all at once so a sale here would be unlikely just by this post. Maybe if it occurred the OP would send BF a nice cheque.

Tolerant? If we let one person exploit BFC for their own gain then why not let everyone. He could have simply asked the question of who to get in contact with without the sales pitch. End of story. I'm not discussing it any further.

Wasn't really a discussion, was it?

I have now paid for Gold Membership so I guess my request for 'advice' will now be allowed.

1. Don't forget to change your usergroup, instructions are on the membership page.

2. Kalooch is zealously enforcing the rules here. If you want to offer something for sale, it has to be in the right subforum, and has to be very specific....cumbersome, yes....but a longstanding method at BladeForums, and effective.

Best Regards,
