Sales seem slow

Just wondering what you're thoughts are on the market. I've seen quite a few customs up for grabs and they're not moving. For a while it seemed like they'd sell in a day. Has everyone's interest drifted elsewhere?

Are you talking just about Bucks ? I think it depends on the knife and the price.

Knives that are priced right, and would be considered desirable, still seem to sell...

Even with the bad economy, there are still people that have plenty of money to spend. Knives seem to go in trends. What is really hot one month, may not get as much interest the next month.

Any retailer will tell you that after the holidays the market slumps. This is why you see so many January sales and clearances - i.e. price cuts.

Not a bad time to buy if you can afford it.

Seems to me the "starting price" of many knives is too high and consequently no bids.

There are some people with money, but most of them have money because they don't spend it unless it's a super deal or an especially rare knife in perfect condition.

It's a buyer's market and has been for several years.

Not a good time to sell your collection.

I rarely hesitate to buy something that I want that I don't think is overpriced and that holds true, holidays or not. I've bought several from private parties and on the auction sites just this week.

There's just not been much of anything offered lately that has interested me, or that hasn't been what I consider over priced.

That's a second consequence of the bad economy.

What happens is that a lot of people will not put their best stuff on the market.

If something REALLY good pops up these days it's because the seller was in a financial bind and had to sell it. Then there are a few who just don't care (inheritance, etc.) and a few who don't know what they've got.

But people in the know hold off with their best stuff until the economy improves.

You just don't choose to put a treasure out there if you know you can probably do a lot better a year or two down the line.

That's why we don't see as much really good stuff as we'd like to see right now.

I pulled the trigger on a 307 the other day only because it was priced right.

I paid more than I should have on a 301, just depends on how bad I want it and how often I see what I want come up. If I only see something one time in the last year I will spend more than I would normally.

A Jan/Feb 'slump' is pretty much the norm, even in a good economy. I wouldn't be concerned.

It appears that one of our regulars is selling pretty much everything he's listing in the for sale forum. It doesn't seem to be so slow if you are selling what folks are looking for.;)

As far as I'm concerned, let the retail market boom and let the post-market sales go ... oh ... so ... slow ... ! :)

Some collectors will NOT buy period now, but many more still buy anything they want...I will only if it's truly rare and I will likely never see it again or it's just too good of a deal for something I need bad for my collection. For example the 2008 NKCA 112 with the blade cut out..800 made but on ebay every 3 weeks or so I'm a buyer for under 50.00 shipped but not for more than that..But if Joe put up a super rare 112 or the Holy Grail of them all a prototype 1972 era 112 showed up I would be a STRONG buyer..Even if I had to sell KJ's tractor! For most collectible Bucks I'm seeing a 'softer' market and a lot less 'stupid' prices paid than I noticed 2 to 3 years ago.Back then ONE sale at a real high price on ebay would run up prices on the same model knife for months..Not now.

I'm similar to Bucksway, except I'm not really a collector. I just look for great deals on highly collectible older knives.

And there are plenty of great deals out there. Some of the people who have been stalling on selling have come to the point where they can't hold off any more.

I buy because in a few years this stuff will probably be selling for a lot more than it is now.

I'm different though.....in that I wouldn't bid on anything Joe put up for auction, because you KNOW that his stuff will go sky-high because a lot of big-money guys will be competing to get what he's got.

One would probably have to wait a long time before getting a better price than Joe can get now.

I'd rather buy from the unknown buyers.

:)
