Has anyone in any other state besides IDAHO having to pay a sales tax when purchasing directly from Buck?

I was just ordering a 50th Anniversary 110 from Buck and at checkout was surprised to see a sales tax added.

Never had that happen before with any of my orders from Buck.

Yes, I've had sales tax added once or twice but years ago to a online purchase made by me while I was in Oregon. It is a mistake, IMHO, unless you have nexus (Physical presence) with Idaho However, application of state sales tax is a hot button issue. California and Florida are aggressive cross state taxers. Florida had a case where the state held that sales tax should be collected because the buyer had nexus when radio wave advertisement for the purchased item crossed into the buyers state and they did not set foot into Florida!

BTW, Oregon has never had a sales tax. Never will. And, due to lack of fresh air, I don't recall what state got credit for the paid sales tax that Buck extracted. Software doesn't always work right and the laws are plenty confusing because they ore written that way in order to give the clever a way out of paying.

Yes, every time ordering I have paid tax.....I figured it had something to do with them originally being in California.
interestingly.... I have also ordered from Jacob's website, also in Idaho, and was charged tax there as well......

Yes,

I don't buy direct from Idaho any more. Most of the discounts are lost for me in CA because of the CA state tax I have to pay from a company in Idaho. To me it's BS, to each his own, pay the extra tax if you want. I buy things from stores all over the US and Buck is the only company outside of CA that charges me CA state tax. Like DC I just figured it has something to do with the fact that Buck still has a few contract custom guys doing work for them here in CA. So, if I buy one of those custom knives that had work done in this state, I guess it would be a different story. But, to have to pay CA state tax on an item that was not made or sold here in CA is just plain extortion to me.

Also, the knife dealers I buy from are also charging me shipping from Buck to them then shipping charges from them to me (Buck used to cover the shipping to the dealers). However, as the dealers are not in Idaho they don't charge me sales tax.....yet;). This is a sore subject for me, can you tell...lol (RANT OFF)

California and Florida responders (residents of aggressive cross border taxing states): To clarify: Buck, an Idaho operation, withheld CA and FL state sales tax from your purchases made online (not ID state sales tax). Do I have this correct?

In NC I am not charged sales tax on mail order purchases UNLESS the company has a physical presence anywhere in NC. If I order from Bass Pro Shop in MO I still get charged NC tax due to their retail stores in other parts of the state. Buck could still own commercial property or have business interests in CA. OH

I remember paying the tax each time. But I do not remember it saying where it was going....it did seem about right for the amount CA sales tax would be though.....

Honestly, I figured it had something to do with them originally having incorporated here in CA.....

I am in Florida. Have ordered from Buck maybe 30 times in the past. The latest was maybe two months ago.

I built a 110 from the Custom Shop today and went to billing and there was sales tax added in. That is the first time.

I've not heard anything new about a sales tax in Florida. Ours has always been like Old Hunter's in NC. The company had to have a physical presence.
I stopped ordering from Amazon when they announced plans for a distributorship in Brandon, FL because along with that came a sales tax.

I cancelled my order with Buck for the same reason. I will try again and see if it might have been a mistake and write about it here.

I just tried again and a sales tax was added at billing. I cancelled again.

I may cut way back on future purchases if this is something new in Florida that taxes all internet sales.

I stopped ordering anything from a certain large seller on the bay that is out of VA because they charged sales tax to Florida. They evidently have had a physical store somewhere in FL from what I could find.

2 recent online orders (in the last couple days) one from Virginia and one from Oregon, neither charged sales tax.....
Maybe it is an idaho thing? Or something to do with specific companies....
Athough, I am not sure why Jacob would charge tax for CA

Yes O,

That is correct for me here in CA. I also said that Buck is the only company that is out of state to charge me CA state sales tax.

I get hit every time from BUCK... Here in CA...

I was told because they had some kind of business still here in California...

 :thumbdn:

I just tried a purchase on the Buck website and it charged me sales tax. It's ever done that before. Perhaps it would have deleted that tax had I actually proceeded with the order but it did show it which it never did before the new website.

I fear the days of tax free internet purchases are limited. I think in Missouri the buyer is supposed to "self report" internet purchases and pay tax if they exceed $2,000 a year. Once you exceed the $2,000 limit tax is due on the total amount. I wonder if anyone in Missouri actually self reports?

New York State actually makes you pay an assumed internet sales tax based on your income. You can not pay it , but that opens you up to an audit.....Not sure why Buck would start sales tax now and I hope they reconsider the issue....Anybody email or call them yet?

In Virginia, any kind of physical presence will trigger a dealer's application of sales tax - store, warehouse, marketing, sales rep, etc.

With no physical presence, it is optional if a dealer applies a sales tax.

If no sales tax is applied, individuals must self-report and file a 'use tax' annually on all out-of-state purchases with few exceptions - medicine, mail-order catalog under $100, etc.

VA internet sales tax rate is 5.3% ~ 6% depending on where you live.

I've noticed that Knife Center is a little over an hour away. Personally, if I'm going to pay sales tax in addition to shipping, I'd rather drive over, browse, kibitz, hand-select, and get instant gratification. ;)
