Well, Blade HQ started a while ago and I just found out that starting this year Knife Center is also starting to add sales tax, at least on things shipped into NY state. That does put a crimp on my relationship with both dealers, but I guess it was not something that they were looking to do to their customers, but something the state started to press on them to start.

Oh well, this might help stem the buying for me ;) a blessing in disguise maybe?

I might be mistaken, but I believe it's some sort of legal requirement for a business once they do a certain amount of sales to a state. DLT just started collecting in Minnesota a few weeks ago. KnifeCenter and BHQ have been doing so for quite some time.

Amazon does as well, it just hurts when you go to sell later on, which I end up doing after I had some time with the knife, that you end up taking more of a loss than comfortable, as you usually need to set the price just a bit lower than online so you start out at a loss and now losing the tax just compounds that.

Not wanting to get sued by either Fat Alvin nor Peekaboo James shouldn't hurt either BHQ nor KC

Its the price of doing business with leftist-run cesspools

I'm sure that when these online companies are pressed into complying, it will only further bolster their competition that does not do so.

I wasn't aware that dealers were not charging sales tax, but I don't buy that much new. It sure does add to the tab
Oh the good old days

Just another reason to keep our exchange working for our members and keep our knives in our community. Its good for the forum and its members.

Ill now step off my soap box....

In 2018, a Supreme Court decision overturned the physical-presence requirement for collecting sales tax. There are still certain thresholds to meet before an online merchant can collect and remit sales tax for the state the goods are being shipped to, so if you are purchasing from a large-enough retailer, then you will most likely pay sales tax equivalent to that charged in your state.

There are quite a few still that don’t. Tennessee-based online stores have sold me plenty in the last few months without taxes. Oklahoma too. Maybe it’s an inter-state agreement thing?

In Canada, we pay two TAXES - Provincial and the Federal Tax on both Mail and Online Orders, for as long as I can Remember......Like Decades

I try my best to avoid bladehq because they charge me tax and most dedicated knife retailers do not. I too don’t like to lose another $10-20 on a sell here because I paid tax to an out of state retailer.

The law is the law, whether complied with or not. We all like good deals, but there are potential consequences when it is not complied with, whether vendor or buyer.

The vendors do not create the laws...that is up to the state, local and federal governments and their representatives therein.

We are not going to use these forums to find and promote ways to avoid following the law...as that would make the site and its owner potentially open to issues neither needed nor desired.

Caveat emptor.
