Sales Taxes on Knives

I figure this has been cussed and discussed before, but how about humoring this newbie. Do you order your knives on the internet from an out-of-state seller to keep from paying sales tax? Since I used to be an auditor and have a devious mind, I have always wondered if all sellers really pay sales tax to the states. For example, in Texas, all the vendors at gun shows tax all sales. Do you really think this tax is paid? Are we being ripped off? Your thoughts? Merry Xmas

When I say gun show vendors, I am not talking about gun sales. Just clarification.

I don't buy them online or in Oregon to get out of paying sale tax, the only reason I buy them online or in Oregon is because there in no good knife shops here, that don't charge retail anyway. I don't have a problem paying sales tax infact I would rather pay it than Drive to Oregon and buy anything, with are lovely bridges and bottle neck traffic we have between the two states. I am however Strongly against internet taxation, I think the government has enough of the peoples tax money to play with they just need to use it right.
Just my 2 cents

Taxes,... TAXES...we don't need no stinkin TAXES. Seriously though, the reason I use the internet is to TRADE knives. Haven't bought a knife in ages...just lotsa tradin, tradin up, tradin down, always tradin, just ask my wife.

Actually, yes we do pay the sales tax we collect at shows to the state. At least I do, we kinda have to, there are records of the purchase, and we have to keep sales records for years, and if we should ever get audited..... But I do think that shows should be tax free, which is why I don't charge sales tax at shows. I just pay it out of my, er your pocket

. It is sad, but there are only two things that are certain in life, and I'm not too sure that I can't find a way to cheat death

Big Tex,
I buy my knives online for several reasons:
better prices,
better selection, and
lack of a convenient, local knife store.

If I happen to beat the taxman by purchasing from an out-of-state dealer, great. However, I would not hesitate to buy from TripleAught Design or Chai Cutlery, just because they're in California. Exceptional service is worth the extra seven or eight percent that the governor skims off the top.

The lack of taxes is often balanced out by the shipping costs, except for larger or more expensive purchases. There is a major lack of good cutlery shops locally.

dsvirsky, even tho I am kind of new to this knife forum, I have found that the prices are pretty equal and that the tax does make a difference. Maybe I haven't found the place that sells their knives the cheapest, but I am still looking. I have found the Cajun guy out of Monroe, La. to have pretty good prices. I've bought one knife from him and plan on another. Where do you buy most of your internet knives?

You're right, tax can make a substantial diffence in price, depending on the item. The question becomes, "is the difference in customer service sufficient to warrant paying an extra $5 or $10?" Sometimes, it is; sometimes it isn't. To be perfectly honest, when I buy my William Henry CF Kestrel next year, I will probably buy from an out-of-state dealer, in order to save $12 in taxes.

To answer your question, in the last year I've purchased from ABC-Direct, Discount Knives, MJ&S Knives, and TripleAught Design. You can't go wrong with any of these good people.

Hello friends!

Hope everyone is doing great! Merry Christmas to ya' all!

Just wanted you to know that here in sweden we pay 25% tax on our knives...
No way to cheat too, tax is national, so if i buy a knife here i pay approx. the double price or even more.
And if i order from the US then i have to pay costum duties and tax...
