Hi guys,

There are many emails on this topic, but thought I'd add my 2c.

Over the last year or two I have been buying pretty much exclusively highish end custom framelocks. I've also ended up doing a bit of travel and absolutely hate landing at my destination and being knifeless (no way was I going to chuck a Lochsa or even an SnG in the baggage!). I decided to buy a well priced, easily replacable production that I could cart around not fearing a loss.

I ended up getting a Salt 1 PE. Received it yesterday from NG (these are good guys btw). I'm really impressed with the knife. It is a perfect size for what I want, just about rustproof which means low maintenance + I can swim with it. It is also very light and dissappears when carried IWB. It is comfortable to use and fits well in the hand. I'd say my only crit would be that it doesn't have liners - but this is also a good thing in that it makes the knife very light and rustproof. Perhaps G10 slabs might be more rigid that the FRN, but then I don't know...

Anyhow - just wanted to say that I think you guys got this one right. It is perfect for what I need and while not up there with my customs, it is 10% of the price, easily replaceable and just an awesome little knife all round. I will definitely get another!

Cheers,

Greg

its not just about rust proof , IT IS RUSTPROOF . i`ve got the salt pacific , been swimming with it for hours , not a speck of rust anywhere

Yep, rustproof as they come. I bought a Tasman Salt SE when I knew I would be wading around in the Gulf of Mexico for a week over the summer. It's performed flawlessly. 4 or 5 days of constant seawater with no cleaning or manintenance and not a speck of rust. A great knife with fantastic steel that, I believe, actually work-hardens itself. Now, if they would just do a higher end version with titanium liners...that would be pretty sweet;)

How does the steel (H1, I believe) compare to other steels on toughness and edge holding ability? Is it equivalent to 440C, VG-10 or BG42?

I like mine very much, after it's "work hardened", it will hold an edge as long as my 440C's, but what I like about this knife is the way you can get it super sharp and easily. I like wood whittling with it. You can even strop it on the wood to bring it back razor like.

I like a point on my knives so I ground the spine down a little to suit me.
Good luck!

Funny you mention this because I was sifting through my spydie collection for a knife to throw in my bag for a trip to India. My criteria where much the same:

Expendable
Maintenance free
Public friendly
Light

The little Salt 1 fits the bill perfectly for a travel knife. Provided they allow lock blades in the countries you are travelling to of course......
