Curiosity is getting the best of me as I get my first salt pots welded...and right now I only care about high temperature salts.

I know commercial salts are available. I'm curious as to the typical composition. I have also seen/heard/read of people using straight NaCl and 1:1 NaCl:KCl. I have heard to avoid common table salt because of the iodine (though I haven't heard what the iodine does).

Can someone in the know fill me in on the differences, why I should choose one over the other, and any other general information I should know as I plunge in? I was thinking that since I was going to be a very low volume user for quite a while that straight water softener salt (NaCl) might be a nice cheap starter until I understand the process a bit better and get a bit better funding for this hobby.:D

Thanks in advance!
