Salt question

Thank you guys.

Quick question - I'm not familiar with the workings on this blade - would I want to take it all apart and use some blue lock tight on it or will the half turn not jeopardize the screws backing out all the way over time?

Also when you dunking them - I assume you mean just in water to clean?

I have had to loosen the pivots on my salts only a couple of times over the years to clean out debris. I have never used lactate when re-tightening and never had any issues with them loosening up over time. Remember, a half a turn would be to loosen it up and provide space for cleaning. If you are only trying to loosen the pivot a bit for the action, it won't require anywhere near that much. Just a few degrees is all you need.

I've been playing with the thing while just sitting around - open, close, open, close, snap flick, close etc - seems to be loosening up.

If there where carbon fiber handled I could slap on this blade it would be favorite of all time...

brvheart, by dunking I mean that my Salt gets wet often. Fresh water, salt water, etc. When I'm traveling in the tropics it's my EDC. I also clip it to my BCD when SCUBA diving, to my shorts when swimming. When I'm home I keep it in the handlebar bag on my bicycle. I do clean it when I can, but since I know it won't be damaged, I have no qualms about putting it away wet or even gunked up with food or whatever and then cleaning it when I get around to it. So anyway, after a few months or less of this treatment (or lack of treatment) it went from being being slightly stiff opening and closing to just about perfect smoothness. The blade drops against my finger when I depress the lock. Still no play in any direction when it's locked open--well maybe the slightest perceptible up and down if you really pull on it. I believe this is pretty normal for Spyderco lockbacks. My assumption was that it was put together at the factory just tightly enough that it would loosen up the right amount over time.

Thanks Evany!! I def love this thing might pick up a couple more - SE pacific, PE salt I (opposites of what I currently have) and also see if I can get a custom carbon fiber salt I if possible. It's a darn fine daily blade!

I have owned almost every Salt Spyderco out there, and tried almost every model (including the discontinued Catcherman, and Spyderhawk) on many occasions.

All of them flip and work well, not as smoothly as other Spydies I have but definitely none of them had problems. I never put oil on any of them, just water and soap.

But, all of the Pacific Salts I have (a black and a yellow SE, and a coated SE 2015 model) were stiffer when I got them than they are now. The Spyderhawk was the easisest to flick open, and even then it also has improved with time.

After some (quite a lot, in fact) of use all three of them have smoothed out, and after frequent cleaning, dirty days etc. they improved a lot as far as action is concerned.

So, as others said, I say give them time! It just gets better and better. Can't go wrong with any Salt, really!

I'm looking at my Salt I, it's a SE (except the tip) and wondering how well it will take on the SharpMaker

+1 for the Sharpmaker on SE blades. I freehand sharpen everything else these days.

Buy some reel oil, like the stuff for a fishing rod reel. I bet a couple drops and a few hundred open/closes should be good to go. Throw your knife in when you wash the dishes here and there, seems to help. Or maybe the pivot is a bit snug.
