Hi folks,

I thougth I'd educate myslef a tad before the hi-temp salt tank arrives
(from Darren Ellis).

I have been reading up on marquenching/martempering, interrupted
quenches, etc,.... (and getting corn-fused at times!).

I have a simple question: What temps do you use for the following:

Blade steel............normalizing..........temps prior to quench
5160
1080/1084
O-1

Many thanks!

Congratulations!

If you want to get the "most" out of your new salt pots, you should get a good metallurgical primer, such as the quick and easy-to-read Metallurgy Fundamentals, and learn to read isothermal transformation charts (also called TTT charts).
This little book will give a good foundation and describe marquenching and austempering, among other things, with examples of results.

Then you should find a nice Atlas of Isothermal Transformation (on eBay preferably--they're not cheap new) because you'll now know how to design a HT procedure for any number of alloys to suit your goals.

It sound intimidating, but it's really not a big deal. Get Metallurgy Fundamentals and read it. You'll see it's no big deal and you'll have added real competence to yourself.

Plus, Kevin's posts will make a lot more sense when you know a little of what the heck he's talking about!:D

I'll take your advice and start looking for this publication and the
chart book on e-bay.

Best regards,
Dana

Hi Joe,

I just did a cursory look on the web and ebay and found a couple of references.
Is the author I'm looking for for the Metallurgy Fundamentals Ernest Teichart or
Daniel Brandt?

Thanks!
