Salt water folder?

I'm looking for a lock blade knife that I can carry when I'm at the beach or swimming (salt water). Something not too expensive though (around $30)... for just in case it gets lost. Also not too terribly big... max size of a mini griptilian. Any suggestions?

How much do those typically run? I've never been a huge Spyderco fan, so I've never really priced them. Not due to quality... I know they are outstanding knives. Just never stood out to me.

Yup--go with a Salt. And put a dummy cord on it so if you drop it it doesn't go in the drink.

Spyderco's H1 is rather popular. However I havent had problems with Benchmade's n680 or X15T.N though neither are as rust resistant. But hold an edge a bit longer.

Of course if you really wanna spurted you can always get a Ti dive knife

Another vote for the Spydies. I have the Pacific Salt in blackened H1 and it is a great knife.

You can find the Salt 1 for under $60. Definitely save for one of those.

Victorinox Swiss Army Knives are damn resistant to corrosion. Check out their single-blade Sentinel.

Tasman Salt for me. Owned my 3+ years now.

The H1 steel uses nitrogen instead of carbon in the steel (don't ask me how), but as a result, it will never "rust" in water. Contrary to what people have posted, the edge takes an edge and lasts.

It's worth the money.

I've also found H1 to be very easy to sharpen, and it takes one of the most aggressive "toothiest" edges of any steel I know. When you thumb the edge lightly you can feel it grip flesh like it's a magnet.

I am an inshore charter guide on the coast of nc www.reeltimechartersnc.com (selfless plug) and swear by anything made out of Spyderco H1, I am regularly in the salt water with knife on, all H1 and titanium, I never care for the knife and no/zero/nada rust! imagine that not a stainless steel but a rust free one, these products have been amazing....

Worth mentioning how flat the spydies lay inside pocket. Won' stick out like a sore thumb when your wet trunks are clinging to you like spandex. Also the spydie's will be the lightest of Width knives mentioned, a big plus when you dont have a belt like in a bathing suit.

I've been in the Pacific in Maui for hours upon hours several times with my Pacific Salt and it is exactly what they advertise - rust free minus the etching remnants on the "1" in the H1 blade etching. The remnant paricles turned red on the 1 first time out then no rust anywhere after that. Just rub it off with your finger.

I carry mine in my BOB along with other knives at all times and can't imagine not having it for the ocean or flyfishing.

Rinse it off now and then, keep it sharp and that's it. Simple and easy to care for . . . Light, thin and durable too ;)

Topper, I was never a fan of Syderco either, but I needed a knife for work which was serrated, and a sheepsfoot. The Spyderco Mariner was the only one that fit all my requirements. I really like it, and have bought others since. Go for it!

A SAK is what I've been carrying for the time being while at the beach or fishing and has never rusted. I cant remember what model it is but it wasn't very quick to deploy and had no pocket clip. I may take a look at the Sentinel also.

I really appreciate the help and info. I may just go ahead and save for the salt... although the sentinel sounds appealing as well. I'm sure ill warm up to the Spyderco due to it great ergos... and as dshurl said it does seem to be very low profile.

Oh, I checked out the boyes and look to be a quality blade but that's still a little out of my price range.

The SAK would be the best option for the price budget IMO. I keep a sportsman on my keys and it's been through hot, sweaty Texas summers and cold, wet Pennsylvania winters with no rust. Plus the extra tools are always great to have.
