Dr. Dan brought up several good points the other day.
One he didn't mention the best I recall is just how much salt the average American eats, bad for your blood pressure!
I cut back on salt a long time back and haven't added any salt to anything except fresh foods and that only minimally.
This last episode with my heart brought my cardiologist to tell me to take the salt shaker completely off the table and I did.:barf:
Many canned goods have way too much salt for my taste and has for some time. Barbie now rinses any canned goods that aren't salt free and they still have plenty of salt for my taste.

To get to the point the salt subsitutes taste like crap!!!!:thumbdn: :barf:
All but one anyway. I ran across this on the Internet a while back and according to one website it was available in some grocery stores in Phoenix so I had my daughter who works for one of the supermarkets out there look for it and she finally found it.
The product is called AlsoSalt and although it isn't real salt it isn't bad at all!!!!
I can eat it on fresh sliced oranges, lemons and apples that I am often wont to do and I enjoy it.
Some things just have to have that salty flavor to be the best they can be.
I haven't tried it's alter ego the "HalsoSalt" yet but it has the same Potassium/Lysine combo the AlsoSalt does.
So if you need to or want to cut back on your salt intake and if you're low on potassium you might check it out.
http://www.alsosalt.com/alsosalt.html http://www.halsosalt.com/

It can be ordered online if you can't find it locally.
As always use like anything consult your Dr. first or if you've been told to lower your salt intake then you should be good to go.

This has been a Public Service Announcement.;) :p :D

Hey thanks Yvsa. My grandad is in the same boat and eats that fake salt junk. I'm going to order him some as a stocking stuffer. I'll bet he likes it and can't get it. They don't got the internet on the farm in Mississippi, and the stores suck.

I'm not real big on salting my food anyway, but I was complaining of leg cramps recently and my doctor told me I probably needed a little salt on my food from time to time. When you've only got one leg you DON'T want it cramping. L)

What I do for fruits, and salads and rice, where I used to use a lot of salt, is to sprinkle them with lemon juice. I do this especially when I make the fruit or garden salad ahead of time and refrigerate it, since it keeps them fresh, and adds a slightly salty tang.

Canned food. Gaahhh ... anything with as much as 100 mg of sodium I will not buy. And some of the stuff says 2 or more servings per can. "Lite" TV dinners are notorious for sodium in the 1000+ mg range, as are canned soups.

I LOVE salt. But too much is said to be bad for you. Will try the substitute Yvsa recommends. As he said most salt substitutes tase like crap. Been looking for a good substitute.

Thanks Yvsa!

It is strange to me that salt is made up of two poisonous elements: Sodium and Chloride. Either one would be VERY bad to ingest, yet from what I hear, our blood is mostly salt water.

99% of which is used to scour out the bottoms of my cast iron cookery. I use it quite sparingly in my cooking though.

you have to do what your doctor tells you, but I am not convinced there is anything wrong with salt. I use it all the time. I don't add salt at the table but I add it during cooking. Many people will add salt to my food but to me it tastes great and I guess relative to other people's salt consumption, mine isn't huge. But I do like salt.

But I do like salt.

And so do I under certain circumstances, especially on some fruits like I said and then a lot of it.
When you have Congestive Heart Failure, along with some other ailments, too much salt causes you to swell up like a poisoned pup.

One of our daughters in Phoenix has a lemon tree that produces lemons as big as a large navel orange and every year she sends me a sh*tload of them.
One year I ate so many that the acid started etching my teeth and I had to back off.
I like 'em so salty that most folks can't even stand the thought of how I eat them.
Great with a good tequila too. :D ;)

The AlsoSalt isn't salt but does a dayumed good job of imitating the real stuff. On some things a little still goes a long ways but I think it especially good on fresh fruits and veggies.
It sure beats the sh*t out of most of the potassium substitutes! :D
I just can't hardly stomach them and would rather do without.:barf:
In addition to lemon juice and vinegars I've found Tobasco Sauce to be a good substitute as well.:D ;)

Another interesting aside is what my cardiologist told me about my CPAP machine. Using it religiously also helps to prevent edema as it lets the heart work more efficently.
Since I went in for surgery and was forced to use it I'm now using it all the time.
I broke 275 yesterday for the first time in many a moon, usually hold around 280-285 and up to even 290 when excessively swollen.
It's amazing at what even a little exercise will do ainnit?!?!?!?! :D

Yuh nSuh?

You and I, and Young Bert, the not-right dog, went pheasant hunting today.

You missed an easy shot at a rabbit, and took a shot at a rooster that was so far away, all you did was encourage him to fly faster. You damn-near shot a hen!

But, it was around 28 degrees, the ground was hard, the sky murky over-cast in anticipation of tonight's snow, and in spite of your grousing about walking through the tall grass and weeds, we had a good time. Young Bert actually conducted himself appropriately today.

"Hunting" doesn't mean finding or bringing home. Sometimes, hunting for game means finding a place in your being that wants to be...outside.

Glad you could make it.

Great news on the initial weight loss.

if you like salt/sour

bet you'd like sumac sprinkles

adds a little variety to the sprinkle-ons

THEY call me 'Dean'

Dean we have two varities of Sumac here in Oklahoma. One is the small smooth Sumac and the other is also known as Skunkbush although I know not why.
During different times of the year here I love going grazing in the woods. The Greenbriars have little tender shoots in the spring that taste like fresh very young asparagus and are wonderful when you can beat the deer to them.
In the summer the Skunkbush puts forth its seed clusters and is quite refreshing and thirst quenching. Has a lot more lemony taste than the smooth Sumac although I like that too.
The Skunkbush seed pods are a lot stickier too, lots of sap I guess.:D

Yvsa, I'm glad that your are eatin' healthy. This makes me think of my grandfather for some reason. I remember when he would cook me breakfast. It was the greasiest food that I have ever eaten in my life, covered with salt and pepper, and the tastiest breakfast I ever had.

I remember sitting with him whenever he would eat oatmeal. He would take the big sugar can out and coat the whole top of the oatmeal with sugar, eat that layer and put it on again. until he ate it all. I think he went through about 50 tablespoons of sugar one time.

I tried to get him healthier. I brought him bottled water one time, the next week I asked him if he tried it and he said it made the best d&$! cup of coffee that he ever had. And he would never eat anything green, because it looks like it had already been eaten.

I miss the old man dearly, and he lives in my heart and mind to this day.
Unfortunately, I did learn the consequences of unhealthy lifestyles watching him get older. I wish I could have done something to help, but he's was as stubborn as I am.

Thanks Yvsa.
I am notorious for eating too much salt.
This lo-carb diet I am on is also very diuretic, so I get cramps alot from losing all my potassium.
This alsosalt looks like the perfect thing for me.
I dont care if its not the same flavor, ill get used to it.
You might have just given me an extra ten years of life.

I know how much of a pain that is. Can you get something like bananas to counter it?

I can, but bananas have lots of carbs!
So, I have been looking for a source of potassium that has no carbohydrates and that has not been easy in japan.
I just ordered two bottles of this alsosalt and I am hoping it will cure my cramping.
It can get bad, my legs try to curl up into spirals when i go to sleep!

Yvsa,

I gathered sumac berries in Kentucky once
to take home & use for sprinkle
:D ended up with a mess
---experiment,
not knowing proper way to separate seeds out

India groceries sell a sumac powder
big handful for $2-$3

Lot easier than trying to harvest my own

It's used in the Middle East too,
but haven't looked in those groceries here.

gatoraid is full of sugar. hence, high carbo.
I am on low carbo.
Thats why its kind of hard to get all your vitamins...

I agree with ddean, sumac is GREAT!!! I love sumac on rice and kabobs, and I sprinkle it on everything now. I didn't learn about it until I had dinner with a persian family and I complemented it so much they bought some. sumac is tasty stuff

I'm a fan of sea salt, unwashed and unrefined. Tastes a bit better, plenty of trace minerals in there, and there's enough of that iodized refined crap in everything else that I eat that I'm not particularly concerned about an iodine deficiency.

It seems to taste a bit less salty than refined table salt, but I find myself using less of it. I've read that salt cravings can be caused by a lack of trace minerals. Maybe this was my problem?

Edit: Forgot to add, that "Mrs. Dash" stuff (the regular kind) definitely imparts a salty taste to things, especially in large amounts.
