I'm going to need a salt towards the end of summer here for when i will relocate to Florida....Its for Military use (coast guard) and I was wondering what you all recommend: SE or PE?
Here is how I see it...

PE:
Easy to sharpen in the field, easy to maintain, can use for food and more delicate applications (so to say)

SE:
Good for rope/clothing (rescue), the tip has a small patch of PE (sort of best of both worlds), but hard to sharpen quick/in field

Just want to hear anyones argument on the subject. Also still trying to pick yellow handle or black....I'm leaning toward yellow...easier to find in dark/water.

THANKS!!!:p:p

I have Salts in both PE as well as SE, if you think you will be cutting lots of line and freeing up any other types of flotsam, I think you will be better served with the SE. The PE Salt makes for one heck of a maintenance free landlubber EDC however:) Yellow handle is nice for the environment you will find yourself working in, and get yourself a Spyderco Sharpmaker and the SE will be as easy to sharpen as the PE. The H1 steel is quick to get a nice edge. Bottom line is both will work for you, so don't sweat the decision too much:D

I picked up a Pacific Salt PE about 2 weeks ago or so. I really like the PE model and it came with a sharp edge and has worked well for cutting pretty much everything I have asked of it. I did notice it wasn't as aggressive on a piece of rope as I had hoped, but most PE aren't. For Coast Guard duty, I think a Serrated Edge would serve you best. They are going to stay sharp enough to cut well longer and are better at cutting through fiberous materials quickly. The choice of a Salt is a good choice, now its just time to figure out which one suits you best. Honestly, I almost pulled the trigger on a tasman serrated about 2 months ago, it just felt really great in the hand. But I imagine it wouldnt be well suited to all tasks. Let us know what you pick. I'll be picking up a SE Salt 1 soon enough. Oh, get the yellow handle. Who else is going to have a yellow knife? Just yesterday someone commented on my 'tactical yellow knife.' Thats all I needed, another black object to drop at night.

I kind of like the dual approach on this one. Get a PE Salt 1 for EDC and foodie tasks, and get the Saver Salt in SE for emergency use. That way your emergency rescue knife is always sharp, and you don't have to deal with funny patterns in your peanut butter.

I recommend a yellow handle serrated Atlantic Salt or Pacific Salt.

But if those are too big for your taste then go with the Saver Salt.

Yellow handle Atlantic Salt w/ full serrations for a pure hard use, work knife.

I EDC a Salt 1. It gets used a lot for 'typical' tasks and a lot of food prep. It will get the job done, but not the way a SE Atlantic will.

Get a Pacific Salt. It has been my constant companion since its purchase, always present in a EDC setup in which the other knife (the other Spyderco, that is :D) always changes. Buy a serrated edge, yellow handle. With a Spyderco SharpMaker, the most convenient sharpening tool out there, it is VERY easy to maintain serrated edges.

I have them both. You pretty much spelled it out whether to get PE or SE......

It is kinda a toss up.... the SE works best for rope & webbing, although the PE does a pretty fair job IF you sharpen it with a courser stone...... leaving a "rougher" type edge on it.

Go with the ATLANTIC SALT..... no sharp point to jab yourself with in rough seas. Also IMO it is much better for rescue work too, in a tight situation you don't have to worry as much about stabbing yourself, the person you are helping, or putting a hole in your life raft..........

Good luck on your choice......... they are a great knife.

PS / Get yellow.
