It's an amazing place. No one else I know can stand it, but nowhere I've been has ever photographed as beautifully. In the '50's they tried to turn the place into Palm Springs, and it failed spectacularly, resulting in lots of abandoned motels and such.
I only know of Salvation Mountain from an episode of "California's Gold" with Huell Howser. I was expecting the guy to be a total whack-job, but Huell is incapable of any cynicism whatsoever and Mr. Salvation turned out to be as normal as anyone. Anyone who lives far out in the desert and spends years painting everything in sight can be, anyway.
