I didn't buy any knives at the NYC show, but the stag from Masecraft in CT was finely figured with VERY little pith.

Here is my hand picked loot. ;)

Dam near fell off my stool  :D

That's fine, primo, top quality, grade A, Stag in my opinion.

Who was that saying the other day that good stag was hard to fine? ;) :)

If you don't mind giving a hint, how are prices at that grade?

Peter, don't clean them up too much. ;) Sorry, couldn't resist. :foot:

But seriously, you did great.

Joe,

 LOL!

Pleasure meeting you.

Kevin,

Superior Sambar Stag has been REALLY hard to find. I was frankly shocked by the overall quality on the Masecraft table.

I absolutely promise not to touch any of it! :o

The carvers on the left and right were $30, the center one was $25. The scales ranged from $40 - $45 per pair. You can't tell from the photos, but carvers are relatively straight and almost solid horn. The scales are very even, neither bulged or bowed, and almost solid horn.

Indeed - that's why so many jaws are hitting the floor when they open this post. OUTSTANDING pieces! Wow.... such potential there.

Now, THAT is some nice stag!

Don't let anybody dip those in shoe dye or potassium promangate.

Good hunting!
Masecraft was the table down near the "Tactical Corner"?

All of the suppliers had some nice stag, I think Masecraft had the best.
I do believe you got the pick of the lot.
Sorry I missed meeting you.

I bought some plain ol cowbone from Culpeppers for a home project.

When Peter visited me before leaving the show, he pulled out this bag and said, "Take a look". I removed this whole stash, which was just lumped in on top of each other.

Like yourselves I was also oohing and ahhing the quality. I promptly found a nice styrofoam padded bag and we gingerly repacked them. Too beautiful to risk a mark.

For the unobtanium makers who Peter will deal with, this represents, ohhhhh, about a twelve year waiting list combined..... ;) :D

The stag has probably already been dipped in potassium permanganate. It is used as a fungal treatment and to kill parasites that can damage the antler. It is what gives stag its deep brown colour.

I think they do use potassium permanganate, however I understand Culpepper uses a heat/pressure/dye treatment (top secret I think) to color their amber stag.

It's initially darker than Peter's and not quite as pretty. It then lightens up as the maker works it to shape.

Starts out like this (left scales)

And ends up like this (if all goes well) ;) :)
