Any tutorials out there on how to work with stag slabs? How to drill, seal, finish, etc.? I've been looking and looking but no cigar. TIA

There is no trick to stag. Its the easiest stuff in the world. Its one of my favorites. I like to use something like 3 in 1 oil on it after its finished. The oil seems to bring out some more colors and seals it too.

The main thing to remember about stag is all or most of the removal is done from the back or pith side as you don't want to remove any more of the bark than you have to.
Use sharp bits when drilling and go easy to prevent chippin out on the bark side.spin round heads on your pins ang your good to go.

Thanks guys. I've had this stuff for 30 years or so but never got around to trying it.

One tool i've found that works well cutting the opening in a stag round for a hidden tang are the Roto-Zip drill bits. They are cut like an end mill and enables you to cut side to side.

Where do you guys get your stag?

At the Blade Show in Atlanta Georgia. You can get all kinds of knife maker things down there for your shop. Hope this was of help to you. Have a great day in what ever you do in life. ----------

Well I'll be at Atlanta but I was hoping to find a regular supplier. Though I guess if I find someone selling it there than I could buy it from them regularly after getting a phone number. Duh! Thanks.

Sambar-Stagg in absolutely no good. Terrible stuff. Stinks, cracks, falls off the knife. All colors fade. My suggestion is to box it up and send it to me for disposal. In fact I am willing to give you the 30 year ago price for it. It is so much cheaper now. Hee! Hee! I can still Remember getting scales from Bob Schrimsher back in the 70's for about 5.oo a set. At last years Blade, banana Bay had it for about 95.00 a set. They were the only ones there that had scales worth buying. Stick stag, or rounds ia much easier to cme by. and a hole lot cheaper too. Makes me wish I made stick tang knives. Naw, not going to happen. Ha! Mike Oh! The other companies are about half Price, and much less than less the quality.

Its better to get it from there and be able to hand-picked the once that will suits your needs. The problem with ordering by phone is you do not know exactly the condition or the quality that you will get. most of the time it will be leftover or false material that you will get. It better to can pick what looks right in person, than to subtle for what ever. -------Good Luck

Barkes is right. It's best to hand pick it. I'll be looking for some good stag at Blade myself. You just got to go through it. Good luck!

From what I have seen at the shows, another argument for buying there is that, if you are looking for carvers or rounds for hidden tang knives, you can not only pick the quality of piece that you want but just as importantly, the size, diameter and shape you need.

One of the values of going to the shows is not only picking material you want but getting to know the suppliers.... just as you want to talk with customers face to face.

What do you guys think about stabilizing stag?

I have been told that it is possible and the Stag really benefits from it. I haven't tried it out yet and I was hopping that others would have something to say on it...

Anyone?
