Neil, as always you are on the money...the Iron wood is spectaculer!!!, what size wheel did you use...I use a 10" mostly...
could you explain the Radiator hose thing????
Again beautiful workmanship!!!
My kind of knife

John,

That one was ground on a 13" contact wheel that I made myself. The 3" thick aluminum I used came from a project at my last job. I progrmamed the CNC mill to cut out and leave the piece of aluminum rather than turning it into CHIPS :) We had several HUGE lathes there, that I used to finish the wheel. I had a company in Tampa apply the serrated rubber. This is the ONLY knife I've ever used it on. Most of my grinding is done on a 6" wheel!! Some day I'll make some BIG knives with it.

As far as the rubber hose....... I wet sand ALL my handles no matter what material they are. I use a piece of radiator hose (3/4") with wet/dry paper wrapped around it to finish aound the finger notches. It works great!

WOW 13", thats a big one,. I met an old school maker by the name of Dan Issacs in Anchorage when I first started...he gave me quite a few pointers, and he had a 16"serrated, connected to 3 hp...what a monster when it ran..He explained it was for his flat ginding.
I am glad to see I am not the only one using a Big wheel....The knives I have in the forsale page were done using the 10". I want a 13" but my Bader BMII probably wont fit it.
So now I am saving for a new machine, or I will make one.

Thanks for the hose Idea , I will try it,,,right now I use different pieces of 16oz leather and some soft Maple.

oh yeah, some oldies music, a good cigar, and a beer helps for the hand work too!!!LOL
