Well I had a package waiting at my door when I got home yesterday. It was one of those mood altering triangular boxes we love so much. I brought it in and let it stew while I got Hannah settled. Then I opened it slowly, those triangular boxes can be dangerous too.

The Samsher inside only concretes my belief that this model is the best I've come across. Its heavy, a monster chopper, perfectly suited for my American khuk needs. I do not practice martial arts. Additionally its got a short hookie handle, and gives me the feeling of holding an old traditional weapon.

In previous tests my other Samsher it chopped second only to my Bonecutter, and that is high praise. This one has a Chandan handle, beautifully polished (Steve?) and a blade that is hair poppin sharp (Steve). My other one is Satistal, and these are my two favorite HI woods with Hill Wallnut being a close third. The blade is probably the best finished khuk blade I own. You can tell it was hammered, but the mastery of the stroke is awesome. I can't imagine modding this rig. Especially since it fits perfectly in the other modded scabbard.

Even the accessory knives are great on this rig. The Karda has been reground and sharpened, and is um... awesome. The Chakma is in excellent condition too.

Anyway, pics.

Steve, I have questions about this particular Samsher. It has no UB on it. When was it made? It is beautiful, sir, thank you.

Very nice. Love that brown frog. Did you make the frog? If so, would you consider selling frogs to some of us forumites?
DanR

Yes, I made the frog. PM me if you want one. Sorry, I thought you guys knew these items were available from me. I don't want to overstep, Nasty, so I need some guidance as to whether that was too salsey.

I loved my Samsher so much I gave it to a friend.

Well, it was nice and I had other choppers....

Andy, a generous forumite donated the Samsher, Jange, and the Rose to the Ram Fundraiser. Not sure when they were made. Did a search and couldn't find them posted as a dotd. He must have bought them direct from Yangdu.

As I said, a Very generous forumite.

Steve

Wow. It sure is well made. The more I look at it the more I'm impressed. Somebody pipe up and tell us how the Jange and Rose are. I was tempted by both, btw.

Samsher Love. . . . . . now there's a song title. Who should we get to do it though? Captain and Tenille did "Muskrat Love", Golden Ear Ring did "Radar Love", but I'm thinking this one is more up Billy Idol's alley, maybe even Rob Zombie.

Sarge

I don't know Sarge. You gotta be careful or there'll be too much gore in the song. Maybe our own Brokenhalelujah will do one for us. He is a musician, you know.

Andy, congrats on the win! Good for you. That is a great blade. Is it a Bura? You didn't mention, but I'm betting it is. Bura made several of these with habaki bolsters and white metal that ran about 18.5" and 29 oz. A couple had standard bolsters IIRC, and a couple had super bright red chandan which were very pretty.

Mine looks just like yours, and was sold by Uncle Bill, who didn't post a pic but mentioned that Yangdu had just laid her finger open with it, and by the way did anyone want to buy it! :D I suspect yours was made about the same time, just about 18 months ago exactly, which is why no UB. (http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=337459&highlight=samsher)

I got it with a nice note from Yangdu telling me it was sharp! and to watch myself. The blade had a slight bit of rust on the end, which for some reason took me three passes to get off. Probably all that blood drenching it LOL!

They are great all around knives, and a beautiful design. I'm going to have to see about one of those frogs that replace the karda / chakma assembly on the scabbard. Really nice work.

Thanks for great pics and sharing.

Norm

Thanks Norm. I didn't see any pics of the Samsher in that thread. You got any?

Thanks for the thread link, Norm.

Got me smiling, and a little misty.

wacherass.

Thanks Norm. I didn't see any pics of the Samsher in that thread. You got any?

Sure, I can dig it out and take a couple and post them. I will definitely do so Andy, but will need some daylight so give me a day or so. In that particular thread there were no pics posted by Uncle, but it did turn out to be a very nice and very sharp knife.

Thanks for the thread link, Norm.

Got me smiling, and a little misty.

You're sure welcome Kis. Me too.

The Rose. Ah, the Rose! A Rose by any other name would... naw, that's not it. See, my mistake was thinking of the Rose as a "knife". So when the big triangular box arrived today, I thought "Sure is a lot of packaging for a 'knife'". Bwahaaaaaaaaaahaaaaahaahahahah!:D The Rose definitely answers the question "What is the difference between a knife and a short sword?".
Overcoming my initial shock, I noticed that the blade is, in fact, hair popping/scary sharp. (With a blade this size, hair popping is scary:eek:). Handle is lovely, feels extremely comfortable. Marvelous finish by Bura, no UB on blade. Feels very light and agile, great balance.
Words begin to fail me; off to discover more delights of the Rose:) .

PS A great big Thank You to Steve and the very generous forumite.

Yea, Steve gets knives sharp.

Pics, Gents, Pics!

My thanks to the generous forumite as well.

Andy, I apologize for the delay as I meant to post these a week ago. Been one of those super busy weeks, as I'm sure you've experienced. But I finally put the knife in the trunk so I could take pics of it today on my lunch hour outside. Not great, but you get the idea.

Here is the famous "Blood Blessed Yangdu Cutter" Samsher :D (Chandra Samsher) by Bura, 18.5" and 29 oz. with red chandan handle. Looks very similar to yours and Joes.

Sweet pics Norm. Awesome Samsher. That handle is a beautiful piece of Chandan, huh? I really love Chandan.

Hey Norm, is that blade etched?? It looks really really nice..

Thanks! No, just had some rust at the last couple inches of the blade that had done some minor damage, so I polished it out with a sisal buff using emery compound, and quickly went over the rest of the blade to match. The wheel ended up giving it a natural satin finish, but not quite as muted as with a green scotch brite pad. This one came naturally sharp so I haven't done anything to the edge as yet.

To this date, the most beautiful Samsher I've ever seen came one day in June when I was sharking but had to step away from the desk for a few minutes. I still hurt from missing it...http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=407958&highlight=Samsher

If Yangdu could convince the Sarge or her other better kamis to produce more chiruwa Samshers with wood that gorgeous, my pocketbook would combust from the friction of being opened so fast and frequently.
