Wonderful work... yes the first one is beautiful as they all are. But that first one is special. I love that style of 'bolster'...

I Asked the question with Dan C. he confirms me that is needed a guard or bolsters, soo a new frame...;)

Beautiful work!!!

The style and grace (yet somehow still beastly!) of Sam's knives make him one of my favorites...:D He's one of those guys that makes a knife and you truly wish that you had made it.

I'm not an ABS judge, but I'm in total agreement with Joe on the bolster/guard issue. That is to say, there is NO issue with that ivory handled knife's "lug-free" guard... quite the opposite actually! It not only shows the element of guard fit-up, it will show his ability to create symmetry in the shaping, detail/cleanliness in the fluting, and a strong understanding of handle fit-up---- to be able to make a handle with blued hardware.

IMHO, that guard without lugs, or bolster (whatever you prefer to call it) is 1000 miles away from the type of thing that instigated the new rule. :)

Most excellent work my friends!!!
:) :) :)

Beautiful knives one and all. Sam has an eye for line and flow that is as good as it gets. Can't wait to see a group shot of the final five. Great images Norbert, they show off Sam's great knives.

Sam Luriquin's W 2 knife with a blued bolster and a fossilized walrus handle pictured above is within the new rule for Journeyman Smith Presentation knives. Sam sent me an email with the knife photo this morning and I consulted with two of our ABS Judges and they agreed with me that the knife is within the definition of the new rule because it has a bolster.

I am the Webmaster for the ABS and I have the rules and guidelines for Journeyman Smith Testing and Judging on the ABS Website at, Click: JS Testing

Like a great number of people, I love Sams work. He would have to be a walk up start for JS stamp imo. Thanks for sharing the images.
Cheers Keith

Great knives! I love the bold, agressive look. These are so distinctively Sam. Ben

Sam is bringin' it to Atlanta! Great looking knives. As Ben states, bold and aggressive. All Sam. Anxious to see him finish this thread off.

Missing out on seeing Sam and checking out these terrific knives easily makes the top 10 list of things that suck about not being able to make Blade. But I sure am enjoying seeing them here - thanks for posting, Joe. That last one might be my fave so far. Norbert - thanks so much for taking these great pics my friend.

Roger you will be there in spirit.

Wonderful knives here. Like said a bunch of times- bold aggressive and undeniably made by Sam.

We're definitely gonna miss you Roger, and I couldn't agree more with Jon. You can spot one of Sam's knife from clear across a crowded room! Kind of like that car commercial says "Aggression in its most elegant form"...I'm a HUGE fan of Sam's work!

Joe,

Thanks for posting this great set of Sam's work, it is always striking.
With GREAT lines and flow.

I love 'em all but that big 10" blackwood ST23 looking bowie/fighter really does it for me.
Very nice images !
I love Huraks too, and Tsavos. :)
