Hi I got a samurai sword from a friend came with a certificate of authenticity great condition but while I was checking the blade and oil I noticed scratches on the blade like someone removed rust from the blade makes me worry if that lowers the sharpness of the blade or not. Please reply if you can tell me

no I want to know if the scratches on the blade effect the sharpness since I heard that katana's sharpness is affected by the geometry of the blade and the the polish..since there is scratches on the blade the polish is messed up so wondering if that ruined the blade and it effectiveness at cutting.

ok thanks thats a relief since its my first sword and my prized possession I just wanted to make sure since I didn't want it to be ruined

I'm interested in what you mean by certificate of authenticity.

Is this a nihonto?

and thoses are all the areas where the scratches are...they r light so maybe hard to see

What kind of sword is that? What is the forge? Is it custom or production? I can guess a couple things about it, but the pics are not too helpful. Why are there scratches? Did the blade rust? What kind of steel is it? Answers to such questions would help us help you. I could be wrong, but that looks like a mono-steel blade, maybe Hanwei or Cheness (just a shot in the dark there); based on the pics, the steel does not look like it was folded. Let us know.

yes there was rust according to my friend is katana a production,a forge made of 1045 carbon steel and not sure if it was folded. it came with certificate of authenticity

Just re-read my post--sorry if it sounds curt, that was not my intention. But the effect of scratches on the side of the blade on cutting capability is a matter of fine, fine difference. More info on the sword will help determine its quality, characteristics, geometry, etc... The scratches may actually be from the prior owner doing some cutting, especially since they look pretty uniform... from edge to spine? Just how sharp it is you'll likely have to tell us.

what he told me its razor sharp the scratches are from rust removal..the blades thickness is 0.29 inches, blade hardness of shinogi is 42 degree and blade hardness of yakiba is 45 degree all I know on the sword is from the certificate

Yeah, I am having no luck finding possible matches to the specs you mentioned. The forge/ company that produced the katana, and the model will help. Perhaps it is just the pics, but I do not see the distinct waves/layers in the steel that comes from folding. Also, the hamon seems to be (based on the pics) etched and not natural--but I could be wrong, it is just hard to tell.

the certificate should say something about where/who produced it; you can tell its sharpness by (carefully!) holding out a sheet of paper and seeing if the sword can effortlessly slice through it... really, really carefully.
