samurai swords

Do they need to be expensive blades? I have a Cheness Cutlery Katana and Wakizashi, very good beater blades.

Dude is right... I thought he was wanting to see some good examples; not Chinese fakes. Unless you were just joking...

The last 2 are definetly not fakes, easily an $5-8,000 custom made blade. I couldn't tell you for sure how much it sold for.

And the other pictures are also not "fakes", by my definition at least. Each was hand made, in a Chinese owned/operated forge. I have videos of there forge and a step by step video of how they assemble each sword. It's DEFINETLY not a "custom" kind of deal, and they are still pretty much "mass produced" if you will. But they aren't stamped out by machines either, each blade is forged and hammered by hand, they are also hand polished. The tsuka and ito wrap are all done/fitted by hand, no machine work there.

But like I said they are beaters. The kissaki is definetly not polished well, and really it shouldn't be. I've slammed that sword into 2X4's, through tatami mats, a good polish would be wasted the way I use it. I bought them to "play with", and if they break I won't have to take out a loan to repace them :P

the "hamon" on the welded blade pictured looks like it was done with applying some sort of resist while etching the pattern. Doesnt look like actual "activity" of a Hamon etc.... Looks like a fun blade though.

They clay it and fire it, differentially hardening the blade. It's alot more evident on my Shura model. But yah it leaves something to be desired when comparing to other methods such as acid etching or wire brushing. You'll definetly get a better looking hamon out of a, say, Bugei blade.

www.swordforum.com (Sword Forum International - SFI) is a GREAT site. Alot of good people there. I've been a member for a little while now and have gotten great advice there. Actually attended a local cutting seminar with a guy there named Paul Smith. Great place if you collect real Nihonto/collectors, and great for beginners such as myself as well.

I'm no expert here, but my understanding is that the hamon is a byproduct of heat treating the blade for a harder edge and a softer more flexible backbone.

So, acid etching or wire brushing would be purely cosmetic and only an imitation of a properly heat treated blade. False hamons were developed primarily to give the impression that the blade is a good one, or am I mistaken?

theres is a type of etching but its to as extream as the knives we know of.
they use a acid like stuff called Nugui (ground iron-oxide and vegetable oil).
It brings out the hamon and some of the pattern wield

I believe that is 100% correct. But acid etching can be used on a "real" hamon to simply give it a different look. Take for example my Shura pictured in the 2nd pic, the hamon is somewhat "milky" I guess you could say. If you didn't like the way it looked you could polish over it and acid etch a different look.

But yah, most cheaper blades are simply wire brushed.

4w4k3 where did you get that 2nd blade that thing is cool!!

That is definetly not mine, I just had a load of pictures of it. If that were mine I would be doing cartwheels I assure you :P
