can i make san mai from 304 stainless and W1?
i was hoping to used my mig welder to get a fluxless weld going...
is that doable? will the stainless welld to the W1? the spec sheet on McMaster Carr said that 304 has good weldability.
thanks

Stainless and carbon steels don't usually weld together well. The stainless expands at a different rate than carbon steel, so when the billet cools, the welds shear.

If it was something that worked well, the big name damascus makers would be selling it. They aren't.

okay
that works
i think i am going to try some mild steel from Lowes
we will see how it works
thanks

Chris, You are starting to grasp for straws and reach for stars.
Stop and think about what you are trying to accomplish.
The sword blade cracked. There are several ways to avoid this heartbreak again:
1) Never make another sword blade. (This is the only method that is guaranteed to work)
2) use a simpler mono-steel ,like 1050
3) use a simple san-mai, like 1050 and W-1, even 1030 and W-1

You can forge weld the three layer bar yourself easily. Do some reading and studying on making damascus. The san-mai bar is just a starter billet.
If you don't want to make the bar yourself, contact someone ,like Chris Marks - www.marksforge.com - and he will set up the billet for you. I have had Chris make up several large billets for me to forge a sword out of (They were complex damascus billets, but he can do simple, too). If you want stunning, he can do a san-mai with a multi layer 52100 core and twist damascus san-mai sides. He is quite reasonable for the amount of work that is required. On a simple three layer bar, I don't think he would charge a whole lot. He will make the bar to your size request.

If you are going to try it yourself, I would suggest a 1/8" core of W-1, 52100, or 1095 and 3/16 sides of 1050. Then drawn/pressed down to 3/8" . You can then forge it to your desired shape easily.

As I recall, Burt Foster has made san-mai with 304 and W2, so it can be done. Maybe you should contact him and ask for advice. I suspect what it takes is stronger flux...

thanks for the advice!

i really dont want to use stainless... i just had it so i asked the question. i got some mild steel from Lowes. i really dont want to do san mai at all. but the steel i bought is smaller than i wanted.. so... i am making due with that i have so it will be W1 and mild steel from lowes.. what would you call that? i mean.. other than crap
thanks yall

San-OhMai-God ? ....or maybe, "A san-mai blade of High and Lowe's carbon steels".

Actually ,you have a very classic mix.
When making steel blades from tama-hagane, the bloom produced steel in a variety of grades. In the classic style the high carbon grade was forged int a "U" shape to form the surface areas. The low carbon was shaped to make the core. Then the core was set inside the "U" and the whole blade was welded up and forged out.
In san-mai style, the opposite was done. The core is good hard steel and the side surfaces are low carbon.

Chris, try the scrap yards, you will find mild steel generally MUCH cheaper than Lowes or the other retail outlets.... and you will usually find something else to bring home as well. Scrap yards are highly under rated :D
