San Mai/Layered/Sandwiched Steel Ideas/Questions

Where did you get the idea that 3V easily rusts? I've been using a 3V cleaver in the kitchen for a while now without a spot of corrosion on it. We aren't exactly careful about keeping it dry, either.

I am also interested to see if someone laminates 3V barstock, but for a different reason.

Then we are back to the first line of my first comment.

The concept of laminate blades is not quite as simple as choosing a couple of steels you like and just slaping them together.

The whole point of laminate blades is to basically balance the less desirable characteristics
of either steel with the desirable characteristics of those steels.

I don't WANT a hard blade. I edc a DPx HEST at 58 Rockwell. VG10 is the one stainless I think I will ever go back to. All of the models I have ever been interested in from Spyderco come with hallow grinds. No thanks. I don't know where you got the idea I was looking for a superhard letter opener because I neither implied I wanted one or any of the characteristics of one. I'm just sick of people asking for something in the general forums and 9/10 people rub the wonders of spyderco in their face. If Spyderco had a reasonably priced (60-70 dollars) flat ground VG10 blade with a simple liner lock and flipper, with naked stainless handles, then I might be interested. Until then...

I actually wasn't rubbing Spyderco in your face, I was suggesting a better steel. I mentioned Spyderco because they use these newer metals and because you implied all they use are hollow grinds. Just trying to point out that they might make something that you like instead of holding your grudge or prejudice or whatever you want to call it. And not all of these newer steels are super hard, S90V is usually 58-59. However, a super hard steel is great in a knife that is made to cut as long as you know how to sharpen and have the tools. And M4 isn't stainless since you sound like you don't want to use stainless steel.

I was just making a suggestion. I would imagine you didn't imply you wanted something because this isn't your thread. If you are content with your mediocre VG10 (in comparison to some of the newer 'super' steels) to use in your letter openers that is fine with me. However, since this is a forum for people to learn from then maybe someone else who thinks VG10 is the best thing going might be encouraged to try one of these great new steels. It's not just about you.

And your description of what you want in a knife is the last thing I want. A liner lock and metal, especially stainless, handles is one of the few types of knife I refuse to own. I also like the best materials and the benefits they bring to a folding pocket knife. To each their own. I'll make sure not to make any recommendations to you whether asked for or not, since you obviously know everything about what it is you want in a knife. So I apologize for making the recommendation.

Lots of damascus are like that but make sure you do your research on the specific laminate. VG10 is simply amazing. Fallkniven and Spyderco both use it, though I doubt I can ever buy a spyderco due to their ridiculous fanatical fan following and love for hallow ground blades. I don't want to buy a 60HC knife and have to reprofile it upon arrival, that would suck.

Just buy the Military, do it, I dare you.

I DID give them a try, that's what I said! I spent an hour and a half flipping through all their VG10 blades and every one of them is hollow ground. No thanks. I do know everything I want in a knife, and I made it known-I wanted VG10 with a stainless handle, a simple solid liner lock and a flat grind. You started going into a bunch of fancy dancy metals I can't afford nor would ever want to purchase because they are too brittle for any other use than basic slicing. I can do that with a 5 dollar 440A knife. Since people like you start 10 threads a night about fancy Spyderco blades with fancy steels I already have all the exposure one could ever need to make a decision about them, I simply stated that VG10 is an outstanding performer (since all you seem to care about is hardness maybe you should try taking one of your ZDP blades to the woods sometime... some of us live outside of the home and office and actually use their knives for things other than cutting boxes and their fingernails) The reason I like VG10 is because it CAN hold an edge while being USED, and it won't chip unless made to do something it's not-which isn't much since it holds up almost as well as 1095 to rough use.

You must have me confused with someone else. That or you shouldn't assume things about me. It sounds like you make lots of assumptions while you should actually try something before passing judgment. And I spend the majority of my time in one of the most remote places in Florida. You might be suprised what a high end blade will do if you are using it to cut. I use my knives for everything a knife should be used for. And I use them many times a day. But if something requires a screw driver or hammer I use the right tool. I don't even go get a hunting knife to gut, skin, and debone animals. I use whatever is in my pocket. And I don't ever need to go sharpen my knife half way through either.

Anyways, forget I made the suggestion and keep on using what you like and I'll do the same.

I agree I have yet to see a spyderco that I wanted to buy. There are several spyderco dealers around here, so I've had the opportunity to check out many spyderco's and everyone has seemed overpriced.

I've heard a few people say the same thing about how they're not really hot on Spyderco knives, but as soon as they buy and use one, they become converted.

Grab yourself a Military or Paramilitary. I'm not sure if there's a single person on this forum who'd consider those two overpriced. :D

It has NOTHING I want for a 219 dollar knife. I have yet to spend half that on a knife.

Military can easily be found for around $150, Para-Military a little cheaper. If you've yet to spend $110 on a knife, I'm not sure if you really know what you want in a knife. :p

What he says about the Military/Paramilitary is true. There are many people who at first didn't like spyderco knives until they've handles these two blades. You can get a Military in s30v, s90v, and D2. These steels are high quality, as well as the strong locks on these two models. IMO they can hang with any other knife on the market. Especially when Spyderco comes out with the Ti Millie with the RIL lock (frame lock).

Yuna blades with zdp/ats laminate are the best I've encountered so far.

Yuna knives blades are indeed great, Rocksteads laminate blades are also right up there.

Not to mention the ZDP Cali3, that blade is not as good looking as the higher
end laminate blades but works a treat with that FFG and fairly thin edge.:)

I know I don't have to spend ridiculous amounts of money to get a quality knife that performs well. I EDC a HEST and have a RC5 and a custom leuku on my pack. I have a bunch of other knives, beckers, kabars, water knives, camping/bushcrafting knives, etc. Couldn't count em all if I wanted to.

PayetteRucker, if you've got so many knives, you've probably spent enough money to get a Sebenza/Busse/Strider/whatever if you really wanted one.
Rather than complaining about something that a lot of people have come to greatly appreciate, try being positive about the things you do like instead.
It helps threads stay on topic.

Like mentioning that Becker has indeed put out a laminate blade with carbon steel in the middle and stainless on the outside. I completely forgot about that first run of Becker Neckers.

Edit:
KAbar made a Becker Necker in carbon core/stainless sides. Burt Foster and Jerid Johnson also make them, IIRC. Ariel Salaverria may as well.

As Hardheart already mentioned.
