I got a chance to pick up a bar of this san mai with white core, from the bay. They only had one left..too bad there were not more. I did a rough grind and made a little skinner. Let me know what you guys think? Any improvements I need to make. I have tomorrow off and am going to get some scales cut out. I will post the finish pictures this weekend.
Thanks

Looks like a nice design, and good size. Really nice grinding too.

Only thing I might change is to move the plunge back a bit more. This will give you more cutting area, and the smaller ricasso will look better IMO.

Good work

The core is pretty thin - usually about 1mm - .03-.04". This makes a rather narrow strip of exposed edge steel in the final blade. A FFG, plenty of distal taper, and keeping the blade thin helps expose more of the core, but as long as there is edge steel showing on both sides, you are OK.

As you work the bevels down , dip the blade in FC to darken the edge. You have to sneak up on getting the edge centered or one side will have more edge steel than the other. Same for final sanding, sand - dip, sand - dip. The perfect blade will have an equal size dark line on both sides. Get as close as you can, but don't expect it to be exact.

If you just grind it like a regular bar of steel, it may end up way off center.

Nice knife! Make sure to post pics when it's all done! I love the look of San Mai. I Just picked up a forge and an anvil and i can't wait to try my hand at it. Good job!

I'm looking forward to playing with mine this weekend :D

(Really nice looking grind by the way. How does it look when etched?)
