San mia or san mai?

I have seen it spelled it both ways. Are they different types of metals, or technique, or just different ways of spelling it?

People also tend to call Sheaths Sheeths here. Its san mai.

san mai, litterally "three -layer", is pronounced SAN (as in sand)-MY( as in Oh,My).
I see it written san-mai, san mai, and sanmai. The first two are OK, the last is wrong.
