How well does o1 handle sandblasting? Will it rust way to easily, or will it be fine since I will keep it oiled and I don't live near the coast.

Why don't you try bead blasting instead then etch with ferric chloride. Bead alone will give you a dull gray and the FC with turn it jet black.

Sandblasting will give you more surface area to hold moisture and certainly will increase the odds of rust.

I couldn't think of a worse steel to sandblast, frankly.

If that's what you gotta have, though...here's what I'd do:

bead-blast
dip in FeCl (for at least 30 sec)
neutralize in baking powder
rub out with a scotch-brite pad

The problem isn't getting the finish on it...it's the maintenance. With the above...you can just spray down with WD-40 and clean up with a scotch-brite pad (won't change the finish).

I will try the FeCl but what type of container do I use to put the FeCl in since the opening is small. My guess would be glass.

you can get a wide-mount glass jar at Wal-mart, etc. Plastic works too. Just make sure you can get a tight seal. If the stuff ever spills, gets knocked over, splashes out, etc....you won't be very happy with the results.

I store mine in a tupperware type wide mouth screw top 2 quart plastic container with a small pour cap on the lid. I got it from a second hand store. It was originally for keeping juice or something on that order in the fridge. I can open the small pour cap and fill my a smaller container to the level I need with a lot of control and when I am done open the big lid and pour it all back in. Very little spillage.
