Like I said, I start at 120, which is obviously WAY too course from what evryone is telling me:eek: Even the 180 scratches come out MUCH faster. I probably spend 40% of my hand sanding time cross sanding those 120 grit scratches out!!
 
Joe, it's not too coarse if that's where you need to start or where you're comfortable starting. I used to start with 80 grit emery cloth... and did for at least a couple years. The more time (experience) I spend with the grinder/disc sander, the finer I can start. One of these days I'll just be able to make a few swipes with 2000X and it'll be done ;)

I was still starting with 180 or 220 until I started spending a lot of time learning how to better use my vari./reversible 9" disc.
 
I am making a couple of Moran style blades as part of the bunch that I am taking to Belgium, so, after almost two years of owning the thing, I am going to try to use my buffer for the first time!!!:eek:
 
I use Klingspor shop rolls in 220,400, and 600 grit, using Cool Tool II with good results, they don't tear as much. In the finer grits I use the 9x11 sheets.
 
Where are you guys getting the Cool Tool II from? Is it available at the chain hardware joints or does it have to be ordered? Thanks!
 
I've been using Gator and 3M Imperial. I think those are both aluminum oxide. I used to have some silicon carbide paper (can't remember the brand) that cut crazy fast and left a much better finish than the same grit Gator.
