so, will the rc3 and the sog flash ii overlap each other? i'm sure that a fixed blade is more durable than a folder, but is there any reason to carry both of them?

A fixed blade and a folder can never overlap IMO - especially the two you've mentioned! :p

make sure you keep that Flash II clean... I EDCed mine in Florida for about two weeks before the action was so gunked the blade wouldn't open.

really? what were you doing with it? i've had mine for at least four years now and i carry it every day. not a single problem. well, i've scratched the car a couple times with the clip and almost lost a half dozen times from something pulling it out of my pocket without me realizing it, but other than that, it's been a faithful companion.

allergic to, huh? what don't you like about it?
No, I mean im actually allergic to it. I think its the handle, everytime I have it out for more than a min my nose starts running like a faucet and I can't see. I have since gotten a blackjack I liked so much im going to start buying the brand.

that really bites. sorry to hear that. glad you found a suitable replacement.

If you’re looking for something that will last and is made for hard use. I recommend the Winkler Knives II Field Knife. It’s made to last, functional its sheet system is very cool. A lot Seals carry a version of it.
Its something you can hand down to your kids.

so, after talking to both companies on the phone and looking into it some more, i'm now considering an esee 3mil / bk2 combo. that way i'm getting the bigger knife that i like more and a smaller backup that is more concealable. also, i'll be supporting two great companies and carrying two great knives. if the bk2 or esee 5 are bigger than i'm allowed to carry, i'll still have the esee 3mil that i should be allowed to carry. not ideal, but it works. later, if i want to upgrade to the hhlw scout sheath for the bk2, i can, or i can just carry it in the molded plastic sheath that it comes with. according to kabar, there are ways to rig the sheath to carry it horizontally or upside down with molle gear and they've done them before. that's fine with me. i'll end up saving about $100 just getting the bk2 instead of the esee 5 and i won't feel so bad when i beat the crap out of it. :)

i'm still wondering though if the esee 3mil is necessary when my folder is almost the same size. i'm sure that the fixed blade is more durable, but i'm not sure that it is necessary.

i still need to look into the rules for carrying a knife. my father in law was security forces for a while when he was in the air force and was telling me all the crazy weaponry he was responsible for, but he wasn't allowed to carry his own knife. however, i don't think that was in a war zone. might be a little different.

Becker and ESEE use very similar steels and both heat treat them well. No effective real world difference.

Glass breakers do not depend on mass. On the contrary, the way to break glass is to use as small a point as possible, with a short hard blow behind that point. In fact, spring-loaded strikers are the best choice. Look up ResQMe. Under $10, almost unnoticeably light weight, fits on your keychain. Works way better than a big rock. :)

if it's just a small point and a little force that is needed, why can't i just use the tip of either of these beastly knives? should that work to break a window? doesn't seem like the knife tips would be effected (maybe the becker less looking at the drop on the point).

It will break the window but it will also wreck your tip. Glass is harder than steel and because a knife tip is so fine is will just get bent or broken. I tried it with an old Benchmade just to find out and I blunted the last 1/8" of the blade.

The glass beaker on the 3Mil is just a semi sharp little nub that's big enough to not get damaged but small enough to still break the glass efficiently. Just hit the window in the corner.

Just make a ghetto breaker. Get a spark plug and some 550 cord approx 18". Loop one end around your finger and tie spark plug on the other end. Swing away.

so, could i grind down one of the corners of the bk2 pommel to a small point like on the esee 5 and use that as glass breaker? it would be a really small mod to do and shouldn't compromise the integrity of the pommel for it's intended use as a striking surface for driving the knife into something. also, could i use the pommel as a striker for my firesteel? not necessary, just curious.

I'am also heading to the sandbox and have researched this. Keep in mind lighter is better and a large blade knife might get in the way. Get something with useful blade length and utility and a good multitool.
i'am bringing a Izula and a multitool along with a ZT 0200 folder. Just food for thought

Good choices!

I would say keep it lite, like an esee 4, or a blackjack 125. Something smaller and carbon steel, and if you have money, a military. You could keep 2 knives under 11 oz.

When I was there ( Gulf War ) we carried a pilots survival knife and a multitool. If I were going back I would take a Ontario Tak Or Esee and a Leatherman Wave. You will use your multitool more than any other blade.

well, after going back and forth and back and forth again, i think i'm finally settling... i'm thinking that the esee 5 and the izula will make a formidable pair with little overlap. 5 for big jobs and the izula for more detailed carving work. i still love the look of the bk2, but the esee 5 is growing on me the more i look at it and the warranty and mounting options really help. i think that these two will suit my needs in the desert just as well as they would for many years to come in the woods. i'm not completely in love with the esee 5, but i know that i'll probably forget about the becker once i have it in my hands and put it to work. thanks all for your suggestions.

btw, i was not even considering the izula because it is so small until i saw this...

pretty amazing! i like that it's thicker than the 3 and it carved that wood much better too. my jaw dropped at the end of the video when he shaved the hair on his arm. crazy!

Another great video from one of our forum members!

Duty carry/demo work/EDC in Florida... any sort of salt water, dust, sand, dirt, foreign particles in general will lock that action up so fast and hard it'll be useless. I started with a Trident-it was done in about three weeks. I thought it must have been a mellon or something so I purchased a Flash II for a good deal on base-it did the same damn thing.
