Sanded the coating on the BK15

I figured I could strip it down the road, and I probably wasn't going to use it enough to wear the coating off, so I sanded it down.

250 grit
400 grit
1000 grit

I could have taken a little more off, to make it a little smoother, but I wasn't really worried about it.

Yea, I am digging this. It looks like a less chemical type finish than the gun blued 4 with sanded lines.

Would this be food safe?

My apologies to the owner of said 4, I forget who owns it but I live the look on that too.

I know gun blue is not. I guess since this is essentially the stock coating material and as sturdy as the adherent is after all of that sanding, it's still there, it Should be OK.

I feel that this is another example that taking your time and doing something the hard way Can yield to a nicer finished product over just a chemical stripped version. Which most (myself included) fail to originally realize.

Ponq, thanks for showing another Great looking mod to add to my to do list.

I wouldn't think this would be food safe, as the coating is still on the blade, albeit less than stock configuration and can (will) flake off at will. Since it is sanded now, instead of seeing large pieces flake off into your food, it will come off in smaller particles that will be harder to see. Safer, and easier to let it sit in Citri-strip for an hour or so, then sand off coating easily, for food prep. That is how I treat all my Beckers.

Also- nice job OP. Looks like it will function and work well for what you intend it for.

Hi Ponq,
That looks beautiful. And I will probably be the first to follow. Just got delivery of my 15 a few days ago and have been wondering about what it would be like to just sand off the coating on the flat of the blade. Your work convinced me. I have a question though. Is it properly flat? Could I just lay it flat on the sandpaper backed with glass and sand away?

I believe it is flat.

I just used my fingers with the 250 and 400 grit sandpaper.
I used a sanding block with the 1000 grit.

Thanks for the comments everyone.
