Sanderless in Montana

Norm? I'm buying a variable speed belt sander this Saturday, and it costs 129. I also talked to a friend today who said the speed control would not be expensive to purchase and install.

The only good belt sander I ever had was made custom for me by John Christopher Black, a knifemaker in Garland ,Texas.
The knifemaker belt sanders have very large rubber contact wheels to allow the shallower gringing angle required by knifemakers.
Also, the motors are top notch and all the parts tend to be better quality than any name brand type.

My dad and I were talking and both agreed the best would be the water wheel that rotates nice and slow and stays cool. Of course down here I may be tempted to just sharpen everything in site when the 120* days were on line just to play in the water.....maybe a jacuzzi filled with ice will work....... But my dad voted for the more solid belt sander over the flexible belt. So now I'm wondering.....never got to try the more solid kind. Dave brought one over, but my back was a little out of it so I couldn't control the thing and didn't want to end up with a mess. So any thoughts. I'm getting the feeling you are all talking about the solid, from the posts.....you have to remember I haven't a clue, but did enjoy the nice sharp knives so am in the market.

I"m not sure, but I"m thinking it's what you guys are talking about the belt sander that you have to use upside down. Otherwise I'm going to have to make a trip to home depot and look at all the stuff to define it. Never worked with this stuff before so I am really really green. Now ask me about bread dough..... :D

I think it was a Sears model that stopped running when it was upside down, wasn't it?

I'm getting the Tradesman, Gin. That's a 4" by 36. I know some of the knife makers use them, but it is not a popular width. I can do this because I'm also getting the little Delta 1" by 42"

Like I said; once I get started buying tools, just like guns, I find I want a whole lot of them.
