Ok, got my butt in the garage 2 days in a row. .....gotta be 95° & 85% humidity. By 1:00pm it was unbearable. But since no one is donating homeless knives or loose women......I gotta keep busy somehow.

I had put a nice edge on it, didnt try phone book paper ( cause she cought me last time), so naturally it needed some sanding and polishing......because thats the order my Dad "three finger McGee" taught me. The handle was too short for me to hold it comfortably, I rode up the heel something fierce. And because I broke my razor, then chipped my razor, then the vinegar made it sooo weak, chunks started falling off. So it went into the trash and I searched for another reason to get out of the house.

I didnt want a smooth shiny finish, I think the forging pits retaining black give it a great look, but I did want to polish it. Make the hammer marks stand out and give it a little rust protection. Plus I wet sanded by hand to keep the temp down, even polished very large areas at a time and kept a bucket of water next to me to keep temps low. Then came the handle, I removed the wood ridge that goes between your fingers. Sanded in a new on 1/4" - 1/2" closer to the middle....i think there was already a line cut into the handle and I got out files and sand paper. I had already moved the apex of the butt to the right, making it lefty friendly, so I used this time to smooth out the work and blend.

Wiped it down and hit it with a little wiping varnish (tung oil finish), real tung oil or blo would've been nice, but as long as I dont put 4 coats on it, it should be good. The wood sanded dangerously fast.

Looking good hawk. Nice way to bond with your blade and get to know it in a personal biblical way.

I could see the pics in your first post. It links to your photobucket account. I'm not sure but I don't think you can post direct without paid membership? I think that's how it works anyhow.

I don't see any pics.

I always use the IMG tags - easy peasy.

I really want to see these!:)

Thanks, turns out if I hold my phone horizontal, photobucket doesnt give me the img option.

Oh man I like it! I wanted to do that to one of mine. Glad your doing it! Is that neem wood?

Looks like a winner to me man, fantastic job, I really like the handle as well. Great job

Thanks guys, I dont know about the wood. Is neem a type of palm, or cactus stalk? Ehen you look at the butt, you see the ends of the fibers, gives a totally different grain than the flat areas. That and how easily material vanished reminds my of palm family.

The black markings are nice and even, the lighting washes out the images. Really happy with the finish, and the handle is comfortable now. For me it really highlights the forging process.

Here is a before and after of a neem handle i recently got. It had some black staining on it from what I think is just the Kamis handling the blade while doing the final finish work. Maybe even the sarkis while doing the sheaths but i dont know? It comes off very easily though.

There is another type of wood they call asare which is even more spongy and palm like that absorbs lots of oil. Its the softest wood Ive seen on any handle but it absorbs shock very well and I have not had any problems with it on my KLVUK at all as far as durability.

Great pics, you see how the lines curve at the butt, like normal wood grain. So mine is definitely not neem. It seems to fit your description of asare. Interesting, ive also seen this type of fiber/grain in primitive drums, made from the stalks of cactus flowers. Approx 2ft across at the base. But palm is definitely closer and id imagine this wood is in the cane family.

Stupid is as stupid does. As great as it fits my left hand, it is now uncomfortable in the right. Lol. At least I didnt break it, like the last 5 items ive taken into the garage.

Kinda looks like the "Acid etched" finish "Zombie tools"has as an option.. I find myself really liking it ..

Looks great Hawk! I just did a patina on my KLVUK blade but I like the polishing job you did. What did you use to polish the blade?
