Sanding Mokume and Safety

Quick question regarding working with Brass, Nickel-Silver, and Copper...

I know that breathing the metal from sanding and grinding is bad for you, so I wear a respirator (sp) when doing that. However, I don't when I'm hand-sanding or filing it. Should I be?

I use a mask for all sanding both machine and hand sanding.
