Just finished an ivory "backpocket", single blade trapper, 5" long. Problem is the staining of the ivory from the paper and/or the bolster material contaminating the fissures or small cracks in the ivory. I had polished with paper to 1500 and everytime I think it is near completion, the ivory turns or stains gray. Is there a paper that remains white and comes in 1500-2000 grit? Or is there another soultion? Thanks

Have you tried cleaning with mineral oil...?

You can also try using powdered pumice stone (white) on a piece of cotton rag. It will act like 1500grit and clean it up. If the mineral oil does not work give it a try. Available at most hardware stores that have a decent woodworking section.

you could try compressed air like you use to clean your keyboard.it should blow out most of the dust.

I clean it with soapy water then give a quick wipe with denatured alcohol. The metal from the bolster and the fine grit swarf is the problem.Try to rub from ivory toward the metal, not the other way around. Just clean it up and the ivory will shine. A final buff with a soft cloth is all that will be needed.
