Sandpaper Question

annr annr et al.

Here's a link to the information sheet that I got with the "sandpaper" (microfinishing lapping sheet).

I tried out the 14,000 grit (one micron) sheet this morning. I cut a piece and mounted it on a piece of window glass as per the instructions. I'm very impressed! It cuts reasonably fast and yet produced a nicely polished edge. I imagine that using this first and then following up with the 60,000 grit (0.3 micron) sheet would produce an extremely fine edge. For my purposes (a nice working edge) I think the 14k will do very well. By the way, I used it dry at first, then wiped it down with a little mineral oil on a paper towel and it cleaned right up.

A Ace Rimmer , Thanks for the info.

It looks likes I jumped from 9K to 60K. Let me know how that works if you finish with the 0.3 micron. (Yes, I do require an extremely fine edge with little/no margin for error or surprises during use.)

The main observation I had after completing the series of sandpapers, including the 60K, is that the edge retention was much, much better, even years later. The feel of the knife cutting was like a butterfly--so light and easy.
