What is the best brand of sandpaper to use on knife steel prior to heat treat? I have been trying some crap from Harbor Freight and it just falls apart after a couple minutes.

Help me get some good sand paperz!

Thanks

I use GATOR GRIT made in finland its a silicon carbide wet paper and is excellent and very resonably priced at 90 cents a sheet.

Chris,

I hope you get some good responses on this thread...

My $0.02... as a recent convert from HF paper.

Give Rhynowet Redline paper from Supergrit.com a try. I first heard about it searching through old posts by Deker and Mr. Bump. Finally ordered some about half-way through my last knife. I posted some of my initial impressions HERE. Bottom line is there is no comparisson between Rhynowet and HF paper. HF paper should be ashamed of its very existence.

I typically only use 2x72 belts on my blades prior to HT, but hand-sand w/ paper from 240grit up to 1200-2000 for final finish.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

Erin

Same here.

For the hand sanding I use 3M Imperial Wet or Dry sandpaper.
