Have you noticed there is a difference sharpening soft cheap aus8 with diamond vs s110v?

Well likewise there is a difference between s110v and Tungsten carbide.

Diamonds aren’t magic. With more wear resistant steel they take more time.

It will sharpen with diamond but the chipping will come from anything it runs into that it can’t cut. Rogue staple? I’m also curious what would happen if it was accidentally dropped. Would it shatter like a ceramic knife? Don’t know that answer but posing the question.

Honestly I did not notice difference when sharpening softer steel vs harder one .. .. Actually I found that when sharpening harder one is faster to bring back to shaving sharp then the softer steel one ..
 
Reprofiling high vanadium high hardness steels can take a very long time by hand, even with diamonds.

Touching up a already pretty sharp super steel is a whole different story.

Honestly I don’t understand how someone can not understand why tungsten carbide would take very long to sharpen. Resharpening harder materials takes longer, even with diamonds.

Then again I also don’t know what you call sharp.
 
As I say , I never felt that it take more time to me to sharpen 52100 or M42 steel ...............no mater if I just resharpen edge or I put first cutting edge on new blade. Now...if you use that clumsy Lansky system is another story

Honestly no but I have sharpened enough types of steel of various hardnesses that I tend to assume it will be difficult to sharpen.

I feel like I am maybe dreaming... maybe I haven’t entered reality yet. Am I really trying to defend the point that higher hardness vanadium packed steels are harder to sharpen than lower hardness ones?

I’m not the only person asking abiut this. Every time these knives get brought up one of the first things someone asks about is the difficulty sharpening it.
 
I have, many times over many years. And yes it takes longer than steel. How much longer depends on what steel you're comparing to and the surface area difference between the two, as well as the ratio of TC to binder material. High surface area with most tungsten carbide and you'll wish somebody else was doing the sharpening. But a high carbide steel can be the same. Also the "freshness" of the diamond plate will make a huge difference. Old diamond plates will be considerably slower going than brand new ones.

How prone to chipping a TC blade will be is going to depend on the sinter mix and what's in it.
