Sandrin Tungsten Carbide Knives

o_O 0.0003" edge is about 7.5 microns which is quite thick in knifenut world. Feather DE has edge about 200-300nm wide. Even if 0.00003", 750nm would gives bloody-shave

Sandrin's warranty is ... (get ready for this) ... 30 days.

The following is excerpted from an email exchange I had with a Sandrin rep. in Sept. 2016:

Sandrin rep:

I have been informed that our 30-day warranty is all that we have to offer. I do understand that you may be looking for some peace of mind. Please understand that we only build the highest quality product available on the market.

My response:

Thanks for the info.
I mean no disrespect by what follows. Rather, I'm offering honest feedback in the hopes of helping Sandrin build its business in the USA:
I find a 30-day warranty ridiculous. A one-year warranty is normal even for cheap consumer goods. The shortest warranty I've ever seen offered is 90 days, for factory-refurbished items.
If Sandrin is truly building "the highest quality product available on the market," I would expect Sandrin to offer the best warranty in the industry, not the worst.
I wouldn't spend $5 on a knife with a 30-day warranty, much less $1300.

The blade material might be unique, or at least very different but..... It might be a horrible decision for a blade material, there haven't been any third party reviews, and the folding model handle design is absurd. Now make that $1200+ and a warranty worse the cheapest crap on ebay, and you have a total loser.

I'll stick with steel and Stellite 6K. Neither have failed me yet. Plus I have been moving away from ultra high hardness steels. With the exception of K390 and Maxamet, but they are easy for me to sharpen.
Most knife makers will have sharpening tips or suggestions. Do they give any tips for sharpening these blades? I don't know from experience, but seems like it would be a PITA!

Likely requires being sent back for sharpening.

Just looked at their website.

I want some of what they’re smoking.

Micron tolerances. Really. Look at the closeup images of the fit of their handle inlays. It would be truly laughable if it wasn’t so sad.

To be fair, if one had enough time (or patience), one could measure a mile in microns...

These knives seem like they're all marketing without any backup to prove their claims. The fact that they are also on Instagram speaks volumes. I'm extremely cautious about any maker who is on Instagram.

I wouldn't touch these knives with a 20' pole. Just my opinion...
Really? Pretty close to any maker worth his salt is on Instagram nowadays.

You might as well say you don't trust any maker who's on the internet.

They want their first customers to "field test" their knives. They don't actually know how they'll hold up in real world use. That's why they give such a short warranty. If the knives start breaking they don't want to have to give the money back.

Seems almost like a scam to me. "Yeah we invested tons of money into researching this future tech knife so it is expensive, don't worry its the best knife evar!"

Considering the type of research they are involved in, I think the CPS technologies TC bladed knife will be the better solution. I posted a video about them on the first page of this thread.

I don't know if they are even working on a model for consumers though. The only info they have available on it is that one video.

They had a new model not crazy expensive like the other models.
The new one (TCK 416) is visible here :
https://global.sandrinknives.com/products/tck-416

It's not at all a good looking folder but I ordered one just out of curiosity for the tungsten carbide blade and as an exotic piece for my collection.
I should receive it in October and I'll create a thread with pictures and thoughts about the knife.

wow, something is just weird...

weird! they seem to now offer a lifetime warranty? That's a good improvement over 30 days...
0.9mm thick blade (0.0354" inches), nice... but WHY have multiple silly holes in the blade? (I might get one if they offer a non-hole version) I look forward to your review in Oct!

Its a cool concept. But till I see someone test it independently I'm gonna stick with good ole iron and carbon.
Or iron carbon vanadium chromium and tungsten. And so on.

What a change a year makes! No more beautiful tragedies.

I also look forward to the review.

the handles are terrible!! could they have made them any more plain ugly and non-ergonomic? I complain like if they did a better design job I would have the money to buy one!!! but really couldn't they have put a little more effort into the design aesthetics?

LOL. Please go to their page and read their write up on the “special knife” the Platinum Mamba!

One of the most important knives ever created!

I actually like their little TCK knife. Too bad they decided to not only go with tip down but also a clip that is attatched on with the pivot screw. This tends to mean if you want a good action you need the pivot loose enough that the clip rattles.

Eta: nm actually they have other screws in the clip. So that means it is just an ugly tip down clip. No problem with the pivot likely.
