Sanity check 1075 stock removal knife

Fun note about hardening 1070/1075 from RMP.

So I started to get worried that maybe I didn’t harden it well with quenching in canola. All I can say is, after tempering and before putting an edge on it, I took the blade and a mallet to a nail.

Now, with no edge on the blade, the nail was damaged, the blade not. It may not be a 62 RC Hanzo sword, but it seems hard enough to be a workable small fixed blade, woohoo! Seems like maybe I ought to finish it.

I put a pretty quick and dirty handle on it. I had a piece of birch laying around and decided to just pound it onto the tang. It didn’t split, so I just made it comfortable and then went to putting an edge on the knife.

It’s sharp, it’s comfy, it’s pretty ugly; but it’s the first knife I’ve forged!

I’ll probably replace the handle with a piece of antler and a brass bolster; but for now I’ll just keep this in the kitchen and use it for my paring knife for a while.
