Read most posts I can find on here regarding a good bench grinder including all the new poster threads, I.E the counts etc. and a book I got on knife making. Haven’t used one for knife making before but there’s a bunch of use I’d have for a good one other than knife making which helps justifying getting a good one to start with.
Already sent a PM to Brett regarding an Esteem grinder.
I had given consideration to: Pheer, Kmg, Wilmont LB, Riverside Uncle Al, Coote
Definitely too Expensive: TW-90, Burr King, Hard Core

As for a motor option I want a VFD, 2hp 110 (So I can change to 220 if I want the more power from the 1.5 at 110 instead of buying a new one). Thinking I’ll just start with a flat Platen and get another attachment for a 10” wheel down the road to save money.

Also, in researching a good steel to start with I found 1084 is reasonable and forgiving with the HT but can't seem to find a supplier that sells it.

Let’s hear some opinion on my plan haha, been saving money on deployment to drop on this.

New Jersey steel baron sells 1084. I recently used 01 for the first time and I fell in love with it.

No metal yards in SD will have knife steel, you gotta order it. I posted a thread about a month ago for suggestions on west coast suppliers. Marshall's hardware in Miramar has o1 but it is pricy as it's precision ground. They also carry any file you could ever want among other tools. They have a good selection of brass and stainless to use for pins or mosaic pins. Gather the tools as you need them. What part of SD are you in?

A good grinder will be so much fun for you.

Steel supplier ?

That's in my reply too

Listed under Steel

Yea I saw that, along with another post about a list of suppliers, NJ Steel Baron was out of stock for the 1084/1095. I got a few feet of 1095 and pins from Jantz to practice with, if they turn out well I can send them to Peters or one of the other places for HT. Suppose I can just shoot an email to NJSB when it'll be back in.

I'm out of La Mesa, Miramar's maybe 45 minutes I'll have to check that out

Thanks

Since you are in San Diego check out Trugrit in Ontario CA. they have steel, handle materials, heat treating service and you can call their knifemaker Jeff Mutz for advice on what you get there.

Good people and have been serving the knifemaking community for a long time.

Trugrit can also handle your heat treat. They might turn into your one stop shop. I have dealt with them for many years. Second on the good folks and good service. Often get my order next day since I'm only a few hours away.

I'm just a hack, but when I get my grinder going and shop cleaned up I would invite some of the more local guys over for a get together and a Hammer in if you will but I don't have a forge haha. I am definitely interested in splitting some cost on a group order of steel. helps save some shipping costs.

Never hurts to save on shipping, especially with steel ha. At the moment all my inquiries are pre-emptive/ taking time in for the order process to be shipped etc., I'm actually still deployed. Just can't wait to get home and start grinding.

Well get back here safe and thank you for your service!
