Might be somewhat moot, given they don't seem to pop up a lot, but I'd like your thoughts on the Sar 3 as a small game knife. I'm beginning to take up hunting, hopefully birds and squirrels, and i am after a small fixed class for clean up work.

Just love how Busse's look, and I was so thrilled with my TGLB, so I'm looking to stay in the Busse family. I'd love to hear your thoughts, and other options. (AMS Rodent Solution, though I'm not keen on he aesthetics?)

Might seem like a dumb question. ;( heh. I'm from the city and only recently moved to a more rural area, so this is all new to me.

If you are in the Bay Area and you want to check one out in person let me know. I'm on the peninsula.

Thanks for the offer. I moved to Oregon last year. Guess I should update my profile. ;)

The SAR 3 is a nice knife for sure. But the AMS CG straight from the shop is great in the hand. At the shop price it's hard to beat :) Some others in the secondary market you might consider are the Max Duty, Max Warden, and the steak knives like mentioned above. They are all in Elmax and are sweet slicers :D
But IMO I really like the AMSCG I have one that is my EDC with leather sheath.

If all you foresee using it for is small game and it will be paired with the TGLB, one of the Elmax Busse/kin blades would be your best bet. If it will be the only blade with you, I'd go with a larger Busse made of Infi.

SAR3, AMS, any of the MAX series, Game Wardens in .140", CULTI are all great EDC/small hunting blades. I prefer something like a CULTI, BAD or .140"GW. I like a pin knife like the CULTI for Rabbit, Squirrel cause I find it easy to make a cautious cut if need be. Lot of the guys here use a BAD or AD for skinning Deer, so you even can go up in the size of game to blade use. No problem!!! Guarantee you will not be under or over knifed:cool:...

Thanks for the comments. Unfortunately it wouldn't be paired with the tglb. I sold it and almost all my non-daily use toys this year for some personal reasons. I don't see needing a large blade in the near future, and don't plan on hunting deer until next season, if that helps the advice. So many choices! ;)

I felt the AMS was way to skinny for any really use, the game warden is 110% more comfy and better tbh.

Yeah. The ams looks a bit thin around the hips, easing me back to the Sar, which still has my eye.

I guess maybe I should be more specific, having some time to think about it. Would a SAR 3 work for cleaning small game, at least mostly?

I mean, certainly a think sending bird and trout knife would likely cut better, but is there any reason that would leave one stranded, like having a cleaver to dissect a frog?

I understand Busse's are thicker than many knives, and you lose some in certain areas, but I really love the look of the sar3. Thanks guys. Truth be told, I want another Busse just to feel back in the group. Such a fun forum. ;)

As an aside, I try to downplay it, but here is something appealing about the AMS.

Any sharp knife will work including the SAR3. If that's caught your eye right now go for it. If you have a folder on you like most of us knife nuts you will have your bases covered if you need a finer point. Post pics of course when you score one.

Yes the Sar 3 is a great little blade for work on smaller animals. Heck I have used one to skin a deer so it is more than capable there. Are there better blades for the job probably but that is all a matter of opinion. I say go for the Sar 3 if that is what is calling you.

Now I'm torn between handle materials. Too many great options have been made!

Well, I couldn't decide what handle material. Conveniently, two people made me really great offers at the same time, one Black and Tan, on micarta. So I bought both!

I like the polished LE blade more. I like the feel of the micarta more, but the looks and the lack of rough edges on the G10. I think I'm going to keep the micarta, but man, Busse makes some awesome knives.

Thanks for all the help guys.

I like this knife more than I even thought I would.

Now if I could only shoot something. ;)

Buying both makes it easy to figure out which will work best for you. I like the way micarta looks after its been used in the field a while, but that's just me.
