i've wanted to get involved in SAR for a while now and was wondering if someone could help me out with the "how to." what steps should i take to get there?

Why not look-up your local units and ask them what qualifications are needed for volunteers. You will probably need specialized skills depending on your location whether mountaineering, orienteering, tracking, boating for example, as well as at least some first-responder medical training. I have spent some time overseas where my skills in organization and logistics were needed more than my "boots on the ground".

I have some friends who are active because they are dog breeders and have raised several scent dogs as well as specialized earthquake rescue dogs.

Find out what is needed and gear yourself up to fill the void.

There are quite a few SAR folks on the forum. River-8, Dunner, and Bruce W to name a few. River-8 is a good source of knowledge and he usualy hangs around the Busse forum and here on W&SS. Where are you located?

I agree you have to see what teams exists locally. Your state will also make a difference. Requirements across states can be different.

You can get more info from NASAR.

Do some research to find what teams are in your area. There are a couple of ways to do this; internet searches (ie google), NASAR, and your local sheriffs office. Once you have found what is in you area try to contact them. Most teams have monthly meetings that they encourage people to come to that are interested in Search and Rescue.

Where are you located? If you are in an area that I know something about I'll try to steer you to any teams in your area.

Can't hurt to get some paramedic training...even the most elementary, as you search around.

Good luck.
