Sarge 7?? To get...or not to get...

Hi Everyone,

I'm trying to convince myself to buy a Sarge 7 while they're in stock(love the look, and that they're built to be light), but am having a hard time pulling the trigger with a Basic 10 already in the arsenal(essentially the same weight), and Basic 8 on the horizon (doubt i'll have the self control to pass up)

I'm a backpacker, so weight is important to me, which is why I like the basic series...but the look of the SAR series is awesome and I love the idea behind it.

I use my blades for two things on the trail: wood/fire prep (chopping and batoning) and cleaning fish. For fish I generally will use my leatherman, but for fire I end up having to do some chopping(nothing major like taking down an entire tree...mostly large branch type of work) and fair amount of batoning. In the past I've been using a boss jack or A1 which has worked alright, but during the shoulder/winter months I've been left wanting a little more length.

Has anyone handled both? Am I overlooking anything besides full tang/handle material/blade length being the differentiation? I'm more a man of function, which makes me think B10 is probably better...but just cant seem to move on from the Sarge.

This addiction is ridiculous...

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

The SARGE is awesome!!!
The B10 is awesome!!
Your screwed!!!

I love the basics but you can't beat the indestructability of micarta or G10 scales and an exposed tang pommel.
The B10 will chop better than the SARGE but the SARGE works GREAT!! The thin edge on the full flat grind allows it to bite deep.
I would hoghly recommend the SARGE. I f you decide you don't like it or the the B10 better suits your needs then you would be able to move it on the Busse exchange.

To give you an example of just how heavy the handles are in the SAR series: even hollowed out (not light brigade style, just straight skeletonized) the weight is still 14.7oz on the SARGE 7. The Basic 10 choiless I have weighs in at 14.4oz, and you get a lot more chopping power and length.

If you like the boss jack but just want more length, theres always the DSSF :p (albeit with a choil)

I'm so/so on the boss jack actually...just got back from a week long trip on the rogue river and after only two days of batoning/fire making (nothing major..fire only went for an hour or two), the edge wouldn't cut paper... maybe I put too thin of an edge on it?? (Work Sharp sharpener), but i was surprised in the result. When I left it was shaving sharp.

I haven't done any controlled tests, but it seems like my A1 has outperformed in edge retention between those two...but with VG-10 you have to deal with some micro-chipping. I took the A1 on the lost coast trail for a week and it came back in better shape, but in a weird way... the edge was still scary sharp in some spots, but not in others vs. the boss jack was consistent. Boss Jack's handles are also on the skinny side, but not a big deal. Design is solid though...first friend who saw it asked where I got the bayonet :) (i got black on black)

There's always the TGLB too. Either one's great. This one's actually the convexed original version.

Can't comment on the B10 but my SARGE7LE just arrived and I love it. I'm thinking of getting another SARGE7 to keep it company. I've got a TGLB on order as well.

I would get a sarge 7 while you can!!!! Or try to find a Sar6. Little bit bigger than the BJ. Or a Camp Tramp or 711

The SARGE 7 is my favorite knife in its size range. Perfect weight, feels great in hand, chops well and the full flat grind is excellent for slicing and detailed work.

Can anyone give me an idea of how thin/thick the edge is? Maybe a pic of the edge or something more scientific ,I am on the fence as well.

That does help Shunsiu ,I can see the edge is pretty thin and stays that way (no thick shoulder) . What does the handle feel like ? I have not seen too many side by side pics , it seems like the handle is similar to an ESEE6 am I way off?

Ive got both the Sarge and the B10. From my POV the B10 is a bit more of a blade heavy chopper with its longer blade, although not as blade heavy as other designated chopper.
The Sarge feels alot more neutral in hand. More of a big "knife" I guess.
If I'd be choosing one as a do-all blade I'd choose the Sarge, feels ok for light chopping when you shift your grip furher down- Its a slicer and would be OK for skinning choking up.
As for gutting fish I wouldnt recommend either of them..................

It's ballpark, but the Sarge7's handle is very long. When you use a lanyard and get back on the handle, it starts chopping like a little larger knife. The great thing about the Sarge 7 is the handle is hollowed out and it makes for a light and ballanced knife. It's a pretty cool knife, the spine is pretty thick but the flat grind makes it a good slicer and cutter.

I bring this thread back from the dead for an update. I received my Sarge7 yesterday from the company store and I LOVE this knife ,the edge is thin enough to slice and I am sure still tough enough if need be. The handle is quite comfortable and gives many grip options ,the texture on the scales is grippy yet smooth enough to not be abrasive. Again I love this knife ,it fits what I have been looking for in an all around Busse for camping/hiking/hunting ,light and comfortable, quick in hand and capable of chopping too. If you are on the fence just buy the thing ,you will love it and if not sell it for what you paid and keep looking for "the one".

Here's the questionnaire that you need to fill out to decide what knives to buy

1: Do you have the money
2: Is it made by Busse, or kin
3: Has your wife filed for divorce yet

If the answers to the first 2 are yes, and the 3rd one is no, buy it
