I picked up a copy of SAS Revised Edition Survival Handbook, (John Wiseman 2009).
I think it is a pretty comprehensive book. I really like the part with edible plants in color photos and star constallation navigation. I really need to learn more about those two subjects.
Does anyone have this edition and how does this book rate versus other books?

I looked thru it at the Library and was amazed ay the depth of details in it. Going to buy my own copy soon.

I have it. Great book. I like Les Stroud's book too, but the SAS book has waaaaay more info.

Lofty's SAS book has been my survival Bible for over 20 years. No BS survival info, and he covers all the bases. 98.6 Cody Lundin's book is a real good one also, and uses some more, newer techniques and stuff, and also pays respect to Mors Kochanski whose book " Northern Bushcraft " is another classic.

I've had a copy (the full size one) since it was first published - terrific book. I wonder what's changed in the 'revised' edition?

I've also got a Gem version tucked away in one of my rucksacks somewhere... Now I need to go and find it!

I love that book, too.
It's translated into even Japanese!
Guess quite popular all over the world and should have saved many lives.

I have the tiny "gem" version...and love it! But, i really wanted to know if the bigger normal sized book has more info?...or is it just the same condensed? Anybody?

My Gem version has all the same info as the big one, just smaller. In fact it has one or two bits that my bigger one doesn't - so it must be a revised edition itself.

so there is a big version and small. all i can find is the large version on amazon

Big version: here

Small version: here

Having said that... they seem to have several different versions of each if you search - best check the published dates. The small one is the 'Collins Gem' version.

hung-solo:
the small one is SMALL-fits inside the palm of my hand! I got mine on amazon a week ago. The difference in the name between the two is "guide"/"handbook"... The rest of the title is the same.

I've got a visitor coming soon that is actually buddies with Lofty and served with him !!!

He said that Lofty was always really interested in all aspects of survival and he was the one that gave the courses to the others on the subject !!!!!

I have the full sized one , as well as an urban one, its good stuff - but mine is rather old, maybe 15-20 years...

Thanks all. Reading it and sharing with my sons. It really is a good source of information. I really like the edible mushroom part. I am very leary about eating wild mushrooms but will be cool to start learning about them.
