Hi folks,

I'm going to order an SAS button compass from TAD to put in the handle of a Reeve one-piece.

Will the compass suffer from inaccuracy if stored in the handle for long periods of time. Or short periods of time for that matter, LOL!

Is the SAS compass the best of its type for this purpose?

Thanks for anything you can tell me.

Funny Rhesus,
I was just goofing off with a Brunton Button compass and my Project 2 today. Since the buttcap is aluminum, you should not have a problem with it interfering with magnetic forces. Funny, as long as the compass is mounted properly (exactly in the middle), it will not be affected.

Now, the knife itself should not present a problem assuming that the knife has not picked up a magnetic signature. I've got a couple of knives that reside on one of those magnetic kitchen knife holders and they invariably all become magnetized. I don't know what that would to to a compass, but I would assume nothing good.

Here's a couple of questions I would ask myself...

Would the damn thing fit in the buttcap?

What other items would the compass displace since it takes up a lot of space?

Since the compass is rather sturdy, can I find an alternative storage option?

How accurate is such a tiny compass in the first place?

Whatever you decide, I'm sure the compass will be perfectly serviceable assuming nothing catastrophic happens.

I would forget a button compass period, but would suggest that the handle of your knife would jar it to hell and knacker it very quickly. If you realy want to use one try to glue it to a bit of coloured plastic that is easy to see ( I have a red casino chip ), then using a heated nail make a hole to take a split ring, you can then attach it to whatever. If your not a "shaver" try to glue one to the side of a Fox whistle.I have both but use, or trust either. :)
