SAS Survival Handbook

I've read on here that "Bushcraft" is more geared toward the northern regions; is 98.6 geared toward a specific region, or does that cover more ground? .
"98.6" is not region specific. Both hypothermia and hyperthermia are extensively covered, with all causes considered.

Grease-man, They also make the SAS book in a tiny field pack version. I have one in the wife and kids packs.

I am sure that "survival" books have been or will be covered very well here...I have a big collection, but I find that lately I have been looking to true stories of people in Alaska and other wild places...I guess after all the survival books have been read...I am looking for real, first hand knowledge. I get alot out of these books as well, and find them a heck of alot easier to read while on the crapper.:D Gene

I don't know how to do multiple quotes in the same post, so...

x-39, thanks for the info, I'm getting that one soon then.

trentu, that's great, I'll look into the more portable version as well.

gunknifenut, I like the true stories as well. No substitute for learning from other people's mistakes as well as what they did correctly. BTW the newest issue of "Field and Stream" had some sort survivial stories in it...a co worker was nice enough to leave it for me. -Matt-

I enjoy reading true survival stories also. You just have to be careful. I have read some stories, mainly in hunting magazines, where people survived despite what they did, not because of what they did.

They basically did everything wrong, were not prepared at all and still survived. Then the magazine writes the article like they are an expert and it is smart to go elk hunting with no matches, no shelter, little or no water, etc...

I just got a copy of Survivorman dvd, and I must say that watching someone perform the things you read in books, successfully, and for real, (like making fire) is the ultimate complement to reading about it.

Doug Ritter has a whole list of survival books that he rates on his website.

Some are 'how-to's' others are classic survival accounts.
