Just mix it up REEEEEEAAAAAAAALY thin. So it's still almost like water and you haven't made it thick at all.
Wipe it on your blade with your finger until you've just put a thin coat on your blade. Dry it off if you like with a hair dryer or propane torch.
In Walter Sorrells sword/hamon video, he makes the statement that you actually speed up the heat transformation rate upon quenching, because, microscopically, you have INCREASED the surface area of the blade, thus getting more contact area with the quenchant.
I've found that it reduces scale to practically almost ZERO.
