After rejecting a lowball offer via PM, I was asked my thinking on the price at $500 shipped--fair question. Heres what Im looking at, cost-wise:
New Basic 11 value on the open market -- about $325 shipped.
Ship insured to Garth: $15
Garth charges to re-finish: about $100
Busse return shipping to me: $15
I sell to someone else and ship insured: $20 now, with increased insured value
Total out of pocket: $475
Plus four trips to the post office1) to pick up new knife; 2) send to Garth; 3) pick up from Garth; 4) ship to new buyer
Plus all the hassle of buying a knife, arranging with the shop to do the work, sending it in, checking on work progress, waiting for knife to be returnedthe process takes several months.
I price knives for sale based on my expectation of what Id pay for the same knife if I set out to buy one. If I didnt have one of these, and wanted one, I could either fool around for several months and put forward a lot of uncompensated time, effort, and hassle, and save about $25maybe even a few dollars more. Or I could buy this one for $500 and have it in my hands in less than a week. If it was me, Id gladly pay the $500 for this incredible knifeand by the way, if this one wasnt an extra, Id never, ever sell it. It is worth the money.
Just so you know.
