Satin finish (with no lines)

There are multi many people who satin finish blades entirely by hand and Don't have lines showing. It's a fact. A lot of these people are sanding down to say 1500 with No lines showing. The dealer who handles my folders would send every on back it I was to have lines running along them. If you go to customknifegallery.com and look at mine in the EDCs and others you will see that this is no bull. Frank

Bill . It just an't so. Niow if you said there wastn't a great job done on one or the other, that could be. I'm sure John W. Smith wouldn't be very pleased to hear his satin finish was a bunch of fine lineas. Frank

If you are sanding you will always see lines.
Bead blasting will give you a satin finish without lines. You can also use a wire wheel, but this takes lots of practice.

I think all of the reccomendation here are possible, but Bead Blast is best.
After bead Blast you can do further buffing process with wheel. I have seen some good knives with this methiod.

Let's break out the microscopes and count the lines in a buffed finish, shall we?

Jeepers, things sure spin out of control quick around here.

Get yourself a container of Mobil 1 motor oil. And I do mean this brand and use a few drops on the area you are hand sanding . Use the same sandpaper sizes and back up whatever it was. You can sand back and forth without getting fish hooks and streaks. It works particularly well on carbon steel, carbon Damascus and some stainless. It does work on 154CM pretty well. Frank

Motor oil comes in various grades. Which one do you use?

PS: any finish which is in any way abraded mechanically, either by hand or polisher, has lines. They may be big enough to be seen, or may be so fine you get an impression of "satin" finish, but there are still lines, it's just a matter of how fine. You could sand/bead blast. You won't get lines, true. You get dots. :D

I always liked the semi-reflective appearance of the swirls in stainless when hit with a random orbital. Doesn't translate to a knife very well, but it looks awesome on my counter at work.
