Satin finish?

I know, for hard use knives a Black ti coating or bead blasted blade is better. But I for one like satin finish blades. Can Emerson produce some on his production knives.

He did this at one time. I too wish he would bring this back. I prefer this over the bead blast finish.

I can't say this is the reason why he no longer makes knives with a satin finish, but here is my opinion.

When you coat or bead blast a knife, the blade does not require to be finished as well as with a satin or polished finsh. This eliminates a step in the knife making process and saves time and money. It also allows the maker to pass on some blades that may not have been ground as well as others. The bead blast will hide subtle mistakes. This eliminates wasted material as well.

This is not really a bad thing. But if a maker is passing off inferior finished blades by hiding the mistake under bead blast. The maker should not charge the same price as those that are properly ground.

Just my .02.

Personally, I wish everyone would simply STOP bead blasting metal. In my opinion it is nothing more than intentional micro-pitting, and opens the door WIDE for rust to set in. It is a maintenance headache.

I also hate bead blasting on a knife. If I wanted to subdue the glare I would get a black-T blade. The finish looks ugly and cheapens the look of the knife.

The rust issue is also huge. On all of my beadblasted knives, rust spots will appear even if I am not carrying the knife. Only frequent oilings or use of Tuf-Cloth prevents this. My satin finish or hard chrome blades have never given me a problem. I see no advantages to having a beadblasted blade. It looks ugly and it rusts and stains. If it gets rubbed or you end up polishing out a rust stain, the finish ends up looking splotchy.

I also hate bead blast. I prefer satin over all other finishes, except maybe black-ti (not to be mistaken for black-t). I wish Emerson would satin finish his blades also.
