I just answered this same exact question in an email not five minutes ago.
In Emerson knives there are really three different "Satin" finishes.
First let's talk production knives. The most common of the Satin finishes is actually a Hard Chrome coating. This gives the blade a frosted look.
There were also a limited number of Chromium Nitride coated production knives. There were five hundred
CN sets made in 1999. Sets consisted of a CN 50/50 Commander and a CN CQC7B 50/50, both serialized the same. The serial numbers were on the logo side, under the thumb disk and were prefaced wit "CN". As an eample, mine is
CN426.
The finish appears the same, until you put them next to each other, then the CN is slightly darker. Here is a
picture, the HC caught the flash a little, but you'll get the idea.
On the custom side, a Satin finish is an uncoated blade. Here is a
picture of a CN Commander next to a Satin (uncoated) ES1-M. The satin Pre Production Prototypes (PPP) are also uncoated Satin blades.
Here is a Satin PPP Commander, with a Satin ES1-M. The first Satin production models back in '98 were uncoated blades, which is why there are folks hunting them hard.
(on a personal note, if anyone has a 98 Satin EKI Commander, please let me know . . . I'll find it a good home)
Another silver finish you'll see on customs is a Bead Blasted (uncoated) finish.
Here is a shot of DavidT's BB CQC6/7.
Hope that helps
John
Edit:
This will make a good question for the glossary, not how to define it in a short paragraph.
